Fiery cross sighted near Landes and Fairmount

Residents report a large illuminated cross over 20 feet high near Landes Sunday night, visible from a quarter mile, burning late into midnight. Another tale says the Klan donated food to a local citizen at Christmas. A similar burning cross was seen near Fairmount on Christmas Eve.

The Van Buren Produce Co. beat the Majonica Independents at home 81 to 37 on Christmas night. Ferguson debuted for the year and played well until he was fouled out. The Majonica squad showed strength despite the lopsided score.

Many Changes in Official Circles in Mason County

Next Monday new faces will take offices in Mason County as a result of the November election. Prospective changes include Bert Renbarger replacing Bert Fowler as sheriff, Marcus L. Kilgore becoming county commissioner, Nelson Shockey as county assessor, and George Steffins as county surveyor. Several incumbents will begin new terms, with ten of thirteen township trustees to be replaced by new members and three re elected. The recount confirmed Ward M. Kilgore and other incumbents on the county slate.

Christmas Program by Van Buren Schools Delights Community

The Van Buren grade levels held a gymnasium Christmas show Friday night. Pupils under Mr. Johnson Boxell Mrs. Sadie Akers and Mrs. Edna Moler presented carols and colonial scene sketches. The high school orchestra debuted with pleasing music and proceeds funded a victrola the pupils sought.

Green quince leaves survive deep freeze at Bratton home

Earl Bratton brought two twigs from a quince bush to the office last week. The leaves remained green and appeared unfrozen despite the thermometer reading eleven degrees below zero. The Bratton store drew many onlookers.

Hanfield School Christmas Party Delights Community

On December 22 the Hanfield school pupils with teacher Landess L. White held a Christmas program for locals. Readings and music from the school Victrola preceded a playlet Aunt Jasf's Christmas Box. Santa Claus distributed treats after a gift exchange. White received cuff links from the pupils.

Plan Drive for More Members in Grant County

The Grant County Agricultural Association plans a broad membership drive with window cards in banks and stores across the county this week. Windshield stickers will go to current members and placards will be set in prominent spots. A special farm bureau edition of the newspaper is planned for January 4 to cover farm news and farmers’ organizations. The group now nears one thousand members and aims to add several hundred.
