Township Schools Trustee William Doyle invites town and township patrons to the Township Teachers Institute and dinner at the School Building on Saturday December 19. The program begins at 8:30 and attendees are asked to bring a well filled basket.
Teachers of Van Buren and Van Buren township plan a fourth township institute in the high school building on the third Saturday of the month. A large dinner and an enhanced musical program are planned. The program lists opening exercises, roll calls, arithmetic tasks, primary work reviews, a sixth grade percentage segment, and discussions on public schools, industrial and vocational education, and the role of vocational education with manual training. Various instructors are named for distinct topics, including Edna L. Strange Lenore Toney Jessie Creviston James W Farr Gidadys Kern Florence Curtis Nellie Thompson Florence Farr Julia Rumple Artie Burke. Adjournment.
Local artist Miss Jessie Judson will hold a bazar at the Gildersleeve furniture store on Saturday December 19. The display will feature Judson's Christmas pictures and novelties all crafted by her, with high artistic merit despite a smaller collection than prior years.
Relatives surprised Lloyd Pilkington on his birthday with a Wednesday evening gathering. A lunch was served by Mrs. Pilkington and Mrs. Richard Pilkington. Attendees included Ed Lanodess and daughter, Harriett, John Carey, Ted Buxell, Ernest Whitecotton and children, J C Hodgson and son, Ari Hodgson, Will Kirkpatrick, and Mrs. Lucy Hodgson. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bird announce the arrival of a fine daughter.
E L Pierson of Pierson and Farley sells his share in the Van Buren general store to Frank Renbarger of Sweetser. Pierson remains until February 15, then Renbarger takes over and the stock will be cut by at least half. A big sale will follow. Pierson also owns a Jonesboro dry goods store and a farm near Oxzlahowma with recent mineral discoveries.
Former Grant county resident Oliver Gaines died last Wednesday night at his step-daughter's home in Richmond from age related illnesses. Funeral services were held at Union Chapel in Washington township with Rev. Elwood Scott officiating. Burial followed in Union cemetery. Gaines lived in Van Buren and Marion townships for many years, totaling over 75 years in Grant county. He is survived by his second wife four daughters and one son Hogin of Washington state.
Miss Edythe Bragy of Mt Olive School resigns due to ill health. Nella Thomas Hodgsvoon of Van Buren will finish the term and assume duties Wednesday morning, per the Leader Tribune.
County agent Otis Crane will deliver an illustrated poultry lecture next Thursday evening December 17 at the R and D hall. Crane brings fifty new government slides and will judge and lecture for poultry associations. Purdue University appliances will be demonstrated by a university expert with lectures during the show. A small five cent admission will be charged.
