The contest continues this week with voting tallies and special incentives. Voters earn large vote credits for subscriptions and renewals and mail catalogs accepted through Saturday. Merchants offer coupons with every $1 purchase, collected weekly in bundles to simplify counting.
Here From Canada Gillespie Hanna of Alberta, Canada, was here a few days, the guest of his daughter, Mrs. Wm. Bray. Mr. Hanna accompanied the remains of his son, George Hanna, who died at Rochester, Minn., and who was buried at Converse last Tuesday. Mr. Hanna returned to Canada last Thursday. He has been there eighteen years and has large interests in that section.
The county council authorized 600 for an assistant to the prosecuting attorney to handle cases from grand jury indictments. Prosecutor Williams, likely Marshall Williams, would fill the post though not yet named. Other appropriations totaled 309 to the county clerk, 300 to the sheriff, 200 to Van Buren poor fund, 500 for court house supplies, 500 jail supplies, 1500 poor farm supplies, 2500 orphans home supplies, 2000 to state penal institutions, 50 to board of charities, and 100 for Superior court room expense.
Mr and Mrs Martin Carl formerly sold their farm north of town and have moved to Van Buren. GL Renbarger also relocated to Van Buren occupying the Newt Thompson property.
Five girls named Georgina Eshleman Vivian Boxel Margaret Mills Mildred Mills and Hileen Paxton traveled to Warren on Friday to attend the Warren Marion basketball game.
The eleventh district hosts its third annual parent teacher convention at the Methodist church Marion from 9 30 a m to 3 15 p m on Saturday December 9 with a program including music devotional welcome remarks from Supt A F Hightey and others, a mothers' pensations address, reports from the counties on progress, and a round table discussion led by Mrs M Pittenger.
A goodly crowd gathered at the Methodist church for a community brotherhood meeting despite bad weather. Rev. B Earl Parker of Marion delivered The Success of Failure, citing late life examples of perseverance. refreshments followed, and business discussed delaying banquet time and January revival scheduling without a vote.
Kev Leckliter of Indianapolis spoke at a Methodist church on statewide prohibition. He urged that Indiana’s next legislature will be dry and that petitions for a statutory ban will be enacted. He noted 852 of 1016 townships are dry and urged signatures to send to the legislature.
David Carpenter aged 18 and Jess Glavier aged 13 confessed to sherif Wright about burglarizing the Corey and Pilkington store on November 26. Rifles, knives and other items were seized. Carpenter will be held on larceny charges in circuit court. Wesley Carpenter, 15, not implicated and to be released. Glavier to be tried.
Sheriff Wright recovers an other watch taken from the store by the youthful burglars. The watch was concealed at the Carpenter home. Authorities believe all missing property has been returned.
A Pretty Store Paxton's drug store is highlighted for its holiday attire and wide line of goods including silverware jewelry watches bibles and books. Shoppers are urged to watch ads and visit early to meet Christmas needs.
J. f Riley received a letter from a concern showing interest in establishing a canning factory in Van Buren. The old creamery building may be used for a reasonable sum, and interested persons should see Mr. Riley.
Burglars broke into the Van Buren Hardware Company on Monday night and stole nine or ten sticks of dynamite from the cellar. Two sticks were found tied to the door of the Van Buren State Bank. The water works plant was also entered but suffered no damage. Sheriff Wright investigated Tuesday morning with no clues yet.
Professor H. H. Scott purchases the Fred Losure property at 00 South Second Street through the Real Estate Service Bureau with E. H. DePoy as manager.
The election of Sunday school officers of the B church for the coming year will be held Sunday December 10 by Rev. E O. Brown. All members are urged to be present.
