Harter Wins Debate At WCTU Meeting On Capital Punishment

The Mile W. C. T. U. held a November 25 meeting at the Roberts home. Rev F S Harter argued for capital punishment while speakers including Rev Lester and Miss Nellie B Kelley debated the opposing view. Five new members joined. a large supper was served for sixty. The next union meeting is January 15 at Plummer Chapel with revival progress and prohibition focus.

News-Eagle raises rates to cope with higher paper costs

The News-Eagle warns subscribers and advertisers of rising costs in paper and printing. Subscriptions must be paid at once or delivery will stop after January 1. December ads priced at 10 cents per inch. from January 1 rates rise to 12 1/4 cents per inch. The paper, managed seven years, seeks loyal support and renewals within four weeks.

Severe Wind Storm Damages Town and School

A heavy wind storm swept the area Saturday causing extensive damage. Many water closets blown over and fences destroyed in the country. Two school building windows shattered and several signs toppled around town. Interurban cars ran late while M. and B. Traction kept service. electric lights failed in many spots though Van Buren reported no outages.

Watch Night Revival at Methodist Church

A watch night revival will begin at the Methodist church on New Year's Eve. Mr. Curless of Swayzee will direct the singing, Rev. Harter the preaching, and a large chorus choir is planned as a featured element of the revival.

At a Sunday session the board deferred organizing a teacher training class pending further investigation due to bad weather keeping attendance light. The next meeting is the last Sunday afternoon in December, when officers will be elected.

The Van Buren Independents beat the Converse Independents 44 to 36 at Converse last Wednesday night. Van Buren traveled by automobile and sixteen players joined the trip. Creviston led Van Buren with 20 points as Bryant added 20 for Converse who fought back from a 19 to 14 halftime deficit to even the score before Van Buren pulled away.
