Former Senator John W Kern Dies in Asheville at 68
Former Indiana senator and 1908 Democratic vice presidential nominee John W Kern died in Asheville North Carolina at age 68 last night. He had traveled there a week earlier to recuperate and died of acute poisoning. Mrs Kern and Mrs George B Lawson Roanoke Virginia were with him at his death. Kern served as majority floor leader and chaired the Democratic conference committee before retiring from the Senate in March.

They threshed 843 bushels of wheat, 483 of barley, and 10 871 of oats from 213 acres, averaging 51 bushels per acre. Refreshments and cigars were shared. A large barn on J A Hays's farm west of Arcana burned Saturday afternoon. Loss estimated at 4500 with building valued at 32000. Contents included hay baled straw and oats in the sheaf worth 1500. Cause unknown. threshing finished days earlier. Insurance existed but did not fully cover the loss.

Van Buren Quildier Boys Sail to France with Rainbow Division
Four Van Buren soldiers from Company E left Marion for Fort Benjamin Harrison and Mineola Long Island to join the Rainbow Division preparing for France. The Van Buren men named are Raymond E. Cochran Frances D. Carpenter Samuel Renick and Everett Heckard. Ten Ambulance Company No. 2 men were also taken, but none from Van Buren.

Veterans Picnic Splendid Affair in Williamson Grove
The Grant County Soldiers Association held its annual Civil War veterans picnic in Williamson grove with a forenoon parade led by Captain W. H. Mershon. A noon dinner followed, a Red Cross stand raised funds, and officers were elected including President Gov. A. B. Crampton. After dinner, Rev. J. O. Campbell and Gus S. Condo spoke, and a song by J. J. Hanks was sung to Silver Threads Among the Gold.
