Isaac Broom writes from France dated July 4 1918 recounting life with American troops. He notes six hours of drilling daily and spends spare time on letters, jokes about Kaiser and medals, and misses Van Buren as bullets sing Home Sweet Home. He asks about Howard and mentions Catholic churches and kisses with French girls.
W K Kirkpatrick sold his 155 acre farm last Saturday to Frank Downs of near Swayzee. Possession is set for March 1. Witmer DePoy and J Winters of Marion arranged the deal. Price was 180 dollars per acre.
Miss Maude Howard left today for Columbus where she will teach domestic science at Columbus High School.
About twenty men met at Kitch and Son harness shop to organize a Liberty Guard in Van Buren. A meeting at the R and D opera House next Monday night August 26 at 8 o'clock will feature speakers and patriotic music. Eligible men aged 16 to 45 are urged to join and spread the word.
Private Samuel Renick, wounded July 15 in France, writes his mother from hospital that he expects to be out soon and back with his regiment. Col. Robert H. Tyndall and Senator Harry S. New send letters of consolation to Samuel’s parents in Frankfort Indiana.
Corey and Pilkington show a remarkable twelve inch tomato stem bearing ten perfectly ripe fruit weighing 53 pounds. Raised by H S Knight and Son on S V Shimp’s farm, two eaten by grasshoppers reduce the count from twelve. Knight and Son farm over eight acres with 7000 slants reset after a tree go out.
J. W. Mitchell of Farmland Ind. was awarded a contract Saturday to drill an oil well on W. K. Frazer’s farm near Van Buren. Marion capitalists form a syndicate controlling 800 acres and oil activity grows with wells found near Warren and Matthews. Analysts predict renewed vigor in the Van Buren field as 20 000 acres are tied to the historic area and industry hopes for a revival.
Rev Spencer Losure of this city will serve the Van Buren charge and preach at Dillman and Marion. Rev E C Brown, longtime local church leader, is assigned to the Warren circuit and will preach at Warren and Mt Zion for another year. Citizens of Van Buren and surrounding area welcome these Christian gentlemen's continued work.
Knitters are advised of changes in sock patterns for Red Cross production. The ribbing is now three inches, not three and a half, followed by eight inches of plain knitting, with the toe last row omitted to leave ten stitches on the front needle and five on the back needles. Socks must be at least ten and a half inches long. Yarn is available at Miss Deane's Millinery Store.
The Boy Scouts announce an ice cream social on Saturday night August 24 on the lot between the Van Buren State Bank and Dr Derbyshire’s office. Public support requested to provide rides.
Notification reached Mrs. Chas A Griffith of Van Buren that her nephew Corporal Floyd Dillon Holmes was killed in action August 1 in France. Holmes, 28, formerly employed and later owner of the News-Eagle, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wellington Holmes of Marion. He enlisted in June 1917 with Company D 125th Infantry 32d Division. He had studied at Van Buren High School and Purdue University before returning to newspaper work.
Witmer and DePoy offer a Wells county farm for sale. This year yields 35 bushels of wheat per acre and about 60 bushels of oats per acre. The property is well ditched and improved and offered at 190 dollars per acre.
