Negroes Hired to Kill a Man in Newport Case

Elizabeth Mohr wife of Dr. Mohr, fatally shot near Newport, faces murder charges after three men Healls, Brown, and Spellman signed a confession alleging she hired them to kill Dr Mohr and Miss Emily Burger the doctor’s assistant who was wounded. Brown claimed Mohr offered him 2000 to murder, while Spellman and Healls corroborated. Mohr denied the accusations, and authorities cautioned they doubt the confessions. Mohr was jailed with no charges yet. Brown, Healls, and Spellman held without bail as investigators pursue a double motive of jealousy and estate gain with a Newport home threat letter disclosed.
