Berlin reports Grodno outer forts fallen as Russian defenses crumble. German and French statements note British losses and Franco British plans to aid Russia. Paris discusses stabilization of exchange and potential American security involvement. other items cover retrenchment in Britain and a German released prisoner in Florida.
An officer aboard the Adriatic says the German submarine that torpedoed the Arable was captured after entangling in a steel net. The prisoner craft is described as the largest type with a large crew. Survivors from the Arable arrived in England aboard the Adriatic along with several named passengers.
Greece blocks contraband trade as Paris reports tentative accord among Entente powers. Greece pledges strict anti contraband measures while agreeing to free export of tobacco and rabins for personal use and to halt Greek vessel movements between regions.
Eight Albanians were sentenced to long terms by an Italian naval court martial for communicating with Arteria via carrier pigeons. Captain Mustapha of the Albanian crew received 20 years. seven crew members got large terms. A large number of empty perfumery cans and substantial gold were found during the search. money was claimed to be payment from Aesiria for contraband and intelligence.
Washington sept 7 cardinal albons presented to president wilson a message from pope benedict regarding peace in europe. after meeting he told reporters he discussed peace with the president and planned to consult secretary lansing on the same subject the cardinal said the papal message urged neutral powers to aid in restoring peace and hinted at possible Germany alliance talks to guarantee freedom of the seas and begin peace terms. the cardinal suggested italians may soon act toward ending the war with further developments expected.
Elizabeth Mohr wife of Dr. Mohr, fatally shot near Newport, faces murder charges after three men Healls, Brown, and Spellman signed a confession alleging she hired them to kill Dr Mohr and Miss Emily Burger the doctor’s assistant who was wounded. Brown claimed Mohr offered him 2000 to murder, while Spellman and Healls corroborated. Mohr denied the accusations, and authorities cautioned they doubt the confessions. Mohr was jailed with no charges yet. Brown, Healls, and Spellman held without bail as investigators pursue a double motive of jealousy and estate gain with a Newport home threat letter disclosed.
Willan F Moran son of Patrick Moran of 2205 Lincoln Avenue passed his physical examination in Washington today and now is to enter the United States naval academy at Annapolis. Young Bevan passed the educational test last spring but eye defects prevented naval entry. Ogden reports relate his final success.
Reports say four Turkish transports were torpedoed by British submarines in the Dardanelles during August. In Texas, U S cavalry and a Mexican raiding party clashed near Brownsville with trains and a trestle attacked. Americans pursued the band as they fled north toward the Rio Grande.

Berlin Sept 2 via wire to Tuckerton NH reports the German admiralty released more details of the August 17 Jutland battle.
