Coal Operators Back Garfield Plan in Wage Dispute

The central competitive field operators endorsed Dr. Garfield s retirement proposal as fair and sound. They criticized Secretary Wilkan s figures as misrepresentative, noting machine miners and Hay workers were undercounted. Operators said the current wage scale, averaging 58 percent above 1914, weighs day laborers and miners alike without tunnage pay, and includes a 49 percent rise for field miners plus seven years for other workers.

Desertions From Army Average 800 Per Month

War department reports deser tions from the Army averaged over eight hundred per month from March to November with a failure to apprehend many.
