A bill slated for May 1 proposes sweeping penalties aimed at unions or any members, broadening anti discrimination rules. It would bar organizations from warning, threatening, or removing members, with enforcement that reaches labor groups and related associations.
Teahone informant reports workers at the Copktin sampler plant walking out over an eight hour shift dispute. Superintendent Waples laments the stoppage as management may replace strikers with ten hour workers at 41.90. Ore remains to be melted and the strike, amid a busy season, pressures a quick resolution and new labor terms.
A mash of notices from Staunton and Berkeley with items on a doctor’s shooting, viticulture bulletin from the University of California, Merriam’s geology trip, Haggin’s Fifth Avenue plans, a Detroit Central directorate change, Michigan Central 1902 year end report figures, and an advert for Hall’s Catarrh Cure. Entities include Jareld He Muss, Ed mund H. Twight, Merriam, James Perrin Smith, Haggin, J. P. Morgan, Winston, and Hall’s. The fragmented pieces report personal tragedy, academic announcements, planned real estate ventures, corporate governance shifts, and medicine ads.
The essay rails at literary blunders and anachronisms in earlier verse and prose. It cites figures such as Charlemagne and Prester John to illustrate how historical impossibilities appear in poetry and myth, noting the absurdities of medieval chronicles and legendary personae across centuries.
President Roosevelt arrived by train to Grand Canyon country and rode twelve miles before addressing crowds at a hotel. He commended Arizona regiments, urged irrigation progress, and warned against building near the canyon while urging preservation for future generations. The visit included diploma ceremonies for Flagstaff graduates and luncheon at a miners camp before continuing to California.
A woman bitten by a mad dog was subjected to a ritual in a market circle led by a witch doctor and relatives. The ritual failed to save her as the dogs’ cries overwhelmed her, and she escaped the crowd only to be found dead at the bottom of a well after the husband sought help from local authorities. The incident is linked to the moonshined “devil hunters” and a grisly aftermath.
The text traces the history of squaring the circle from antiquity to early attempts in Egypt before the Exodus. It mentions Hippocrates of Chios as focusing on transforming a circle toward a crescent, noting a supposed theorem about areas formed by radii and a triangle, while commenting on the lack of practical results from such searches.
The piece surveys competing theories on the origin of the term mastiff. One school traces it to Italian and French roots connected to large humped dogs, while another links it to German masten meaning to fatten, noting the breed’s renowned size and appetite.
The piece compiles fragments from era sources noting Lincoln Douglas debates and anecdotes. It references Leslie’s Weekly and Philadelphia Press quotations, plus comic lines about public figures and cars. The fragmentary text preserves named individuals and period voices amid garbled OCR style.
Ogden note lists Git and Tong as proprietors at 299 25th Street Ogden Utah. The brief entry reads as a street front business listing with names and street address, no additional details or services described.
A benefit concert is announced at the Salt Lake Tabernacle on May 11. Oregon Short Ling will launch a fund drive offering a limited number of mailed tickets with a deadline set for May 12.
Fragmented OCR text mentions reduced rates east via Union Pacific through Denver Cheyenne and other cities. It references transit, dates, and interline routes with scattered city names. The readable content is incomplete but implies pricing or schedule changes affecting multiple eastern routes and hubs.
