Letters Tied to Governor Stephen Threat Case
Evidence before the county grand jury linked threatening letters to a single author, now said to be in Washington DC, with two women suspected. The first letter postmarked December 17, 1917, coincided with a dynamite blast at the governor’s Sacramento residence. A January 4, 1918 stationery letter threatened Stephen’s death on January 30, and a February 20, 1918 missive included a crude map showing a drop point for demanded money.
