Dam Breach At Sammoth Dam Rebuilt For Irrigation
The Sammoth dam, begun years ago and expanded three years later by farmers, now stands about sixty feet high and impounds 11 000 acre feet of water. It could be raised to store 20 000 acres, with an estimated cost around 150 000 dollars. Designed originally as a dirt dam, the final plan uses a concrete core wall with buttresses, creating a 610 feet reservoir width and a 400 feet footing. Original designers Frank C. Kelecy and A F Corremus dated 1903. May 5 approval by state engineer Dotemut. A breach interrupted storage, but water rights and reconstructions followed to resume irrigation supply, tying to July low-water periods. The 1914 Hutchtown break caused crop and property damage, yet the state land board secured water for purchasers and proceeded with reconstruction.
