Terrific fight in French Wood in Manchy region
A Newfoundland regiment letter to the colony governor describes relief efforts at Monchy and a fierce assault. Two companies advanced beyond the objective, stormed a wood and engaged a large German force. Only one man returned from the leading unit, praised as the most glorious fight. The regiment held Monchy’s quick retreat by a tree line under heavy fire. The general urged immediate regrouping with the same courage.
