Pittsburgh and New York Split Doubleheader in July

July 16 New York split a doubleheader with Pittsburgh, winning 8 to 2 in the first game and losing 7 to 2 in the second. Adams and Mathews pitched for New York with Wagner scoring on a sacrifice and Barri driving in runs. In Boston, Moran sparked a 1 to 0 win over Chicago with a scratch hit and a tense pitching duel. Bancroft homered for Philadelphia in a 6 to 2 win over Cincinnati. Brooklyn completed a 9 to 1 victory over St. Louis to wrap up a series, with Brooklyn veteran Crooklyn securing his 22nd win in 28 starts.

Baltimore and Chicago split two in Federal League action

In a double header Chicago won the first game 11 to 3 at Baltimore while Baltimore took the nightcap 11 to 1. Brooklyn beat St Louis 6 to 4 as Lou Lewis led with home runs and three-baggers. Oil Plant Strikers Return as Guards Stand Down

About 1,500 workers returned to the Standard Oil and Tidewater plants in Bayonne New Jersey after days on strike over pay. Sheriff Kinkead and Mayor Garvin said the air was cleared and guard presence would lessen, with wage talks possible by week’s end. British Casualties Reported Worldwide During Early War Years

London July 27 Premier Asquith announced British losses to date total 330 casualties in army and navy. Naval deaths through July 20 stand at 106 and military losses through July 18 at 321,889 with officers killed 499 wounded 887 missing 29. Men killed 7,440 wounded 787 missing 724. Total army losses up to May 82 listed as 245,089. April 11 war secretary Tennant cited 189,347 total losses since the start, implying 182,542 deaths or injuries in the last 14 weeks. Germany and other powers have published lists differently. Britain provides no comprehensive national tally for all nations.

Italian General Killed In Battle In Present War

Italian general Antonia Gayton was killed in action near Troming while leading forces on the front. The dead officer, the first of rank to fall in the present war, faced enemy fire with a riding crop in hand and ordered troops to advance. 175000 Opposed reclamation of 12000 acres farm land
