Turmoil in Tangiers as authorities push new copper coins for taxes. Mob attacks Christian cemetery exhuming graves and decapitating bodies, raids Jewish quarter, loots jewelers, wounds several Jews, and stones the governor who seeks refuge in the palace. Temporary withdrawal of coinage ends the unrest.
Santa Fe dispatchers in Chicago learned from Fort Madison that the Clark special lost over two hours due to a hot box and would not reach Chicago before 1 30 p m delaying the Twentieth Century Limited on the Lake Shore.
In Pittsburg on January 28 seven more bodies were recovered at the Harwick mine bringing the total dead to 78. State Mine Chief James K. Roderick confirms the blast was caused by fire damp. By noon ninety five bodies had been taken from the mine with thirty more at the shaft and about fifty still inside. Funeral services begin as graves are prepared in a plot near the Lutheran cemetery for miners without funds.
New York Jan 28 reporters describe pool rooms reopening after a book maker’s conspiracy to garnish nearly a million dollars from race wagers. Wagers were recorded on honest sheets or falsified, allowing daily pilfering until detectives halted the operation and restructured the rooms. No court recourse for gamblers.
New York January 28 James J Jeffries champion heavyweight halted a runaway team in Central Park to save a man and wife at risk of serious injury near a narrow gorge bridge. The horse pulled hard before calm control was restored.
Jef ries, arriving by cab, heard a woman's screams as the runaway animals neared a bridge. He leapt down, grabbed the near horse by the head, and twisted its nostrils to stop it while being dragged. The sleigh woman was only slightly hurt and Jefferies was uninjured.
Kansas City reports the Charlies W. Clark special train moving through at 3 26 a m six minutes late with no stops. H L Luke relative of Mr Clark rode from Kansas City to Argentine and will join the sleeper to New York. Luke plans to inform Mr Clark of his wife's death within hours. Clark sat at an open window as the train passed.
Dr J A Lindsay president of the National Public Health Association was arrested on arrival in Mobile Alabama from Havana charged with criminal libel of Mobile bay quarantine board members. He had clashed with the board over Havana quarantine rules claiming the port was clean and published a harsh critique in a New Orleans newspaper.
Chris Kopp, ex councilman, indicted for bribery by a Kansas City Kansas special grand jury, arrives home after six weeks. He says he was in Jeffersonville Indiana tending his ill mother and will surrender and post bond. He claims the indictment stemmed from testimony by an enemy. Most others named in the grand jury have been arrested or surrendered.
Salt Lake City report says Grand Junction Colorado sheriff Struthers jailed J D Bee in Nongiers Utah after Bee, seated in a tavern, surrendered without resistance. Bee is charged with cattle stealing in the county, marking the first arrest in the Robbers Roost area in years.
Spanish consul-general E de Bouilla announced Cordova's Chamber of Commerce and Industry will hold Feria de Mayo on May 25 1904 as the oldest fair in Spain. It will feature agricultural products from Spain and foreign manufacturers and invites U S agricultural machinery makers to send their best improvements to the Cordova fair.
In Oakland on January 28 the scheduled 15 round match between Jack Cordell and Charley Seiger went the distance. Referee Smith awarded Cordell the decision on points as the bout drew boos and jeers from the crowd.
Review notes a New York meeting of southern furnace presidents aimed at a large consolidation to restore normal southern markets. A committee will study ore coal holdings and plant data, with Republic Iron and Steel, Tennessee Coal and Iron, and Sloss Sheffield to discuss terms after surveys.
A Westminster coroner's jury ruled Whitaker Wright's death a deliberate suicide by cyanide. The inquiry showed he planned self harm if found guilty, carrying a cyanide tabloid and a loaded revolver, then drank whiskey with the poison before dying. Wright's son and associates testified to his belief in acquittal.
John Hancrow narrowly survived a railroad accident outside Chicago after being hurled onto a cowcatcher and clinging to the engine beam for four miles. Despite two broken ribs and a broken leg, he held on in freezing weather until telegraph signals halted the train and rescuers arrived. He is expected to recover.
San Jose January 23 A Pohlmann treasurer of the Federation is robbed of $230 and two gold watches by bandits as he returns from a Federated Trade meeting. He was shot and possibly fatally wounded. The incident occurred shortly before midnight in Santa Clara coin holdings.
Fresno reports a letter writer demanding 16000 dollars from Southern Pacific under threat to wreck trains from Stockton to Los Angeles. Two letters were mailed to the manager of the Southern Pacific company. Wreck dates were set from the 14th to the 20th and later to the 27th. patrols with armed men were placed on the track between Stockton and Tehachapi.
Dr A D Bevan voiced a claim that no specific pneumonia remedy exists and urged public disclosure and research. Chicago medical society members protested the statement at a recent meeting while acknowledging the lack of a definite cure.
In Helena Montana on January 28 the supreme court refused to issue an order directing Judge Harney to show cause why a prohibitive writ against Butte's board of aldermen should not be annulled. Bernard Noon petitions for city attorney, alleging Mullins malfeasance from gambling money while council members claim the judge delayed action.
The New York report confirms the deceased is Mrs. J. H. Rathbone of Baltimore a wealthy widow and sister of Prof. Otto G. Ramsey's wife. She was 40 years old and had been staying in Cannes for three months after her husband’s death a year ago.

Jessie King, 22, daughter of a Mount Vernon, Missouri family, is jailed in San Antonio on bigamy charges. She wed a Mexican barber named Selina on January 7 after meeting him January 10, claiming a former marriage to George A. King near Tucson, Arizona, years earlier. Her arrest followed a friend of King recognizing her.
Paris reports renewed Russo Japanese tension with diplomats split on war risk. Russian ambassador Neledoff and German ambassador Randolin see possible war element gaining traction while others expect diplomatic adjustments. France and other powers urge independent channels toward peace as cabinet changes occur and Korea’s Pak Chi Sun becomes foreign minister. Russia builds telegraph link from Antung to connect with China Eastern railway, linking Fort Arthur to the Yalu.
Tokio anticipates Russia will send an answer to Japan's latest note by early next week with a possible Saturday arrival. Minister Kurino pressed for a swift response in St Petersburg, while Japan considers its financial plans and emergency bonds.

Mrs. Mary Tredway once Miss Mary Williamson, longtime friend and companion of Queen Victoria, dies at her Chester New Jersey home at age four. Daughter of royal physician to George IV and Victoria, she married a clergyman against her father’s wishes and moved to the United States. She remained cut off from the estate but valued a silk dress the queen gave her.
Frank Dawson was convicted in the circuit court of murdering Anna Hartman at a dance six weeks earlier and was sentenced to hang in March. The killer, from a prominent Monroe County family, acted over a broken engagement.
In St Louis on January 28 Frank Schmidt, 22, a driver for the St Louis Dressed Beef Co., stood on his fiancée’s front porch with her in the doorway and killed himself. The tragedy, attributed to financial woes on the eve of marriage, halted plans for a wedding next month.
