Forces of Central Powers Take Rumanian Heights by Storm
On the Moldavian front Austro-German forces continued heavy attacks and seized several hill positions and two towns in the Zabala valley. Violent Russian and Rumanian counterattacks were repulsed, with Russians defeated in Wallachia and the Ninth army pushing enemy positions toward Jamolk-Sarat and Fokhapli. In Dobrudje Bulgarian troops increased successes, a Russian bridgehead at Matchin fell, and 50 Russians were killed at the mouth of the Danube. The Danish ship Denmark was sunk, and British casualties from December reported at 36,250. Soviet and German reports note repulsed raiding near Riga and Storgan, while French dispatches describe enemy attacks repulsed near Au Verlve.
