Third coal mine disaster entombs hundreds in Jacobs Creek
An explosion at the Pittsburg Coal Company's Darr mine in Jacobs Creek Westmoreland County near the Youngstown and Lake Erie line trapped between 200 and 260 miners. Rescue teams worked through debris and smoke while a temporary morgue was prepared. officials reported limited hope for survivors as the 11:20 a.m. blast wrecked the mine, with victims believed to include many foreigners. The Darr mine, one of the largest in the region, had just resumed work after a brief shutdown, and a hazardous roof fall added to rescue challenges.
