Nivelle’s Verdun Breakthrough Net Two Dozen Thousand Prisoners

Pari reports General Nivelle smashed the German line east of the Meuse, advancing French positions by two miles on a six mile front. The attack, supported by heavy artillery, captured forts and woods and yielded nearly 9,000 prisoners and eighty guns despite wet weather. Harvard Psychologist Munsterberg Dies After Collapse

Cambridge and Maze report Professor Munsterberg, renowned Harvard psychologist and author, collapsed during a lecture for sixty young women. He died within twenty minutes after falling unconscious. Army Transport Sumner Grounded Off New Jersey Shoal

The United States Army transport Sumner grounded off Naraget New Jersey while en route from Colon to New York. Heavy seas and a northwest wind forced the ship to pound on the shoal and the crew abandoned ship early today.

Greece Accepts the Ultimatum

An unofficial telegram reports Greece has unconditionally accepted the ultimatum demands. Athens says no hostile moves by troops or war material have occurred and orders are being issued to move materiel northward. Eight Troopers Hurt In Grapeland Train Wreck

Grapeland Texas December 16 eight troopers of the Town Field Artillery were injured when two sleeper cars of a troop train derailed one mile north of Grapeland. The injured were taken to Palestine hospital for treatment where doctors said all would recover. An earlier report noted several troopers were hurt and that the wreck followed a 29 coach train leaving Grapeland for mustering out.

Sioux City Youth Found Guilty of Manslaughter

Theodora Salner a wealthy Sioux City resident was found guilty by a district court jury of manslaughter in the killing of Vernon Frost a 14 year old boy on October 31 1915. The penalty may not exceed one year in the penitentiary and sentencing is set for January 1.

Washington to invoke old statute for army recruitment

Washington reports that a law from before the Civil War may be revived by the War Department to boost enlistments. Adjutant General McCain found the provision offering $2 per recruited man, with a request to Congress for up to $46,000 to fund bonuses. The plan aims to bolster enlistment by retired soldiers and persuade potential recruits.

French Liner Eludes Raider in Atlantic Pursuit

The Moe steamship Chicago arrived New York with about four percent hours overdue from Bordeaux due to heavy snow and a detour caused by a wireless bulletin reporting a German raider’s position. The bulletin, posted briefly, indicated the raider about 1,500 miles west of Bordeaux on the New York route.
