Correspondent reports American railway troops in Siberia transforming 960 miles of damaged lines and bridges within two months. The 167th and 168th railway companies, 675 men, plus officers under Major E. F. MacMoreland, rebuilt and operated a working railway despite shrapnel and Bolshevik fire. Captain J. Jones led rapid bridge construction and field crews, while Odell and Tuttle’s teams ran street and harbor trains.
Paris August 2 The Supreme Council at the Peace Conference signals it will hear of Archduke Joseph’s resignation to the Hungarian government soon but will not take dramatic steps beyond measures already outlined to the inter allied military mission. The council regards Archduke’s government as unpopular and not a viable partner.
Ernest Ford claimed high gun honors at Ogden Gun Club’s weekly shoot with a flawless 50 targets. A small crowd enjoyed a team race between J. Doon and E. L. Ford vs J. M. Browning and A. P. Bigelow, the first pairing winning 143 of 150. Browning also posted an unfinished 20. Nearby results listed shooters and scores. The other item reports Mexico’s failure to secure Tir A. The late Lieutenant Amos Marcus, famed for guiding a torpedoed submarine to safety while severely burned, was commemorated in the launching of the destroyer Marcus.
