At Cripple Creek on August 4 the strike committee replies to mine owners who vow to reopen. They call the owners bluff, say miners quit for principle and will not return without officer approval. They reject protection for return, claim law and order will keep peace and deter troublemakers.
London August 14. In a prorogation of Parliament the King’s speech highlights Ireland housing, welfare, and land reform while noting improving concord and calls for continued Austro-Russian efforts in Macedonia. It hints at a possible autumn dissolution and awaits Balfour’s Sheffield speech on policy.
At Oyster Bay on August 14 the President and aides including Secretary Shaw Senator Cullom and Comptroller Ridgeley discussed financial legislation for an extraordinary session. Opposition grows to an October call with many lawmakers busy in state campaigns and no definite date set.
Fontana Kan August 14 William Higms aged 20 was killed during a baseball game when a ball struck his temple while running between bases. The accident occurred at the local ball park and investigators were called to the scene.
William D English, longtime surveyor of cus tors on the coast, died today in Oakland California from appendicitis after months of illness and two operations. Born in Jefferson County Alabama in 1842, he was a former Confederate soldier and served as surveyor ofCus toms.
The National Building Trades Council endorsed Congressman-elect Hearst of New York for the presidency by 28 to 19 after a spirited debate. The council approved resolutions affirming trade autonomy and the rights of each trade to its own organizations without interference.
Berlin August 14. The first international session of Wireless Telegraphy opened today and agreed on principles for controlling wireless communications. A semi official statement suggests Germany will convene a broader conference to finalize these points into a treaty.
San Francisco August 14 Referee Graney outlines strict Queensbury rule enforcement for the Jeffries Corbett heavyweight title bout. A special dispatch from Lander Wyoming reports Jim Dollard attempted to shoot up Take City last night killing Frank Bryant and Ross Springer a printer. Dollard is jailed and threats of lynching arise though authorities foresee no major trouble.
A cable from consul John F. Jewell reports widespread damage in Martinique including cane cocoa coffee crops destroyed and fruit vegetables ruined. Entire towns damaged thousands of houses down with few deaths and communication difficult as bread, provisions and roofing materials will be in short supply.
Springfield Illinois reports Governor Yates issued a requisition to Pennsylvania for the extradition of Robert Sidney Smith a Pittsburgh newspaper writer held there. Smith is wanted in Bloomington Illinois on a charge of kidnapping his child who was placed with his parents by court order.
Washington on August 11 states the State Department informed Kabe and Choate that the Alaska boundary commission will hold its first meeting on September 3 in the British foreign office.
In Georgetown Kentucky the cross examination of Henry Youtsey continued today with attorney Violett presenting inquiries into Youtsey's alleged plans to assassinate Goebel. A large crowd gathered to watch the proceedings as Youtsey testified for about two hours.

The Typographical Union in Washington on August 14 adopted a $2,500 appropriation for Philadelphia operations and authorized another $2,500 if needed. It approved annual local union statistics on population, price scales, and hours of labor. It also allows subordinate unions to incorporate in exceptional cases.
London dispatches report no clear confirmation from the American or other embassies about Prince Chine securing Russia’s concern over use of President Sewett’s wood offices in Manchurian duties. Sources say no pending China questions requiring Mr. Footewell’s good offices are known.
A California Academy of Sciences expedition aboard the schooner Mary Sachs returned from a 4000 mile voyage to San Benedicto Socorro Clarion and related islands. They collected about 1000 bird specimens and numerous botanical samples while noting lack of freshwater, an active volcano on Socorro and wild goats on Guadalupe.
San Francisco Aug 14 delegates to the National encampment of the G A R are pouring in from all parts of the country. Officials estimate 35000 visitors will converge on the city for the encampment with many expected to arrive by special and regular trains. Entertainments are being organized with patriotic displays and a possible city holiday on parade day.
New York reports Dunkirk fishermen plan armed retaliation against the Canadian revenue cutter Petrel after it towed the tug Kitty D. to Port Colborne. Captains of twenty Dunkirk tugs prepare to confront Petrel at sea, with hints of returning fire on future encounters on Lake Erie.
William Nelson Crowell told Acting Secretary Loomis that Bogota advices from Panama Canal Company agents report the Colombian lower house in strong favor of ratifying the Haylerian treaty as written and the upper house now one third in favor after initial opposition.
Cable dispatch from Bogota reports the Canal Treaty committee approved an amended Hay Herran treaty. Senator Perezzotto and Joaquin Uribe supported rejecting the treaty. The Senate, by 17 to 8, voted to discuss the treaty in public sessions despite Foreign Affairs Minister opposition.
The State Department ordered U S District Attorney to act against suspects in the alleged shanghaiing of Joseph Terrel Rucker nephew of Georgia's governor and two other youths aboard the British bark Kambria. Warrants issued for the ship captain and master. Willis Coppage of Rome and John Seage of Savannah also reported missing minors.
Ida Von Giesen former Columbia College microscopical anatomy and anthropology professor and 1898 1901 State Commissioner in lunacy faced Justice Delehanty for contempt over a subpoena. She said she had no money no income no bank account no estate income since February and had often gone hungry while dedicating all time to experiments.
Yaris Aug 14 Mme Humbert continued declamatory statements at today's hearing charging witness moneylender Cattan with robbery and usury. She said she expected to leave the courtroom vindicated and would not survive dishonor if condemned. Theodostor testified Humbert raga suffered syncope a week ago and struggled to maintain strength. Concierge Paraire testified Crawford brothers visited the house often and did not resemble Romain or Emile D'Aurignas.
Berlin reports Lieut Gen von Govell er has been relieved as war minister by his own request. Lieut von Ernem, director general of the department of war, is appointed as his successor.
In Dixon Illinois on August 14 Judge Peters Grosscup of the United States Circuit Court spoke to the Tartheran assembly warning that government supervision of monopolies is essential for national survival. He cited savings bank deposits rising to 10 trillion and urged strict corporate formation laws and tight oversight akin to national banks to curb unscrupulous promoters and protect labor. He condemned stock manipulation by crony financiers and said his blood boils with hate and revenge at the "swindles" harming the public.
The jury in the Curtis Jett and Thomas White murder trial returned a guilty verdict in Cynthiana Kentucky with life imprisonment for both. Defense attorney Golden announced a motion for a new trial. The court adjourned until 1:30 PM as the defense prepared the appeal if overruled.
The United States cruiser Chicago arrives off New York after a 12 day 2 hour voyage from Lisbon covering 2050 miles. Captain Cornwall reports engines ran on five of ten boilers and coal use was 560 tons. He recalls cordial meetings with Emperor William King Edward and Queen Alexandra and Lisbon hosts. The voyage followed the great circle route amid fog and one rough sea.
A. E. Batson was executed at 1 42 p m in Lake Charles for the February 1902 murder of the Earl family near Welsh. He did not confess. Batson, a field hand, claimed Ward Warl identity while selling stock. relatives found Mrs Earl and four children shot with throats cut. The Board of Pardons urged commutation, but Governor Heard refused.
George Creighton, 29, arrested in New York on forgery charges totaling up to 12000 dollars. Creighton worked as a law clerk for Townsend and Wadell.

The body found in a hotel room was identified as Captain Marty Ekin of Los Angeles. He was known in Detroit and had recently left a draft for 815 dollars at the hotel, which was returned unpaid, raising questions about the incident.
