A mob of over 100 attempted to seize and hang Maynard Hudson after an alleged attack on a white 12 year old girl. Police were overpowered and a deputy was injured but Hudson was moved to Chillicothe for safety. The crowd dispersed but vowed to renew the search, raising fears of a racial clash.
Wise, postmaster of Fairdesling Missouri, jailed in St. Louis on charges of missing over $1,000 in accounts. He was arraigned before US Commissioner O’Bryan at Poplar Bluff and sent to jail in default of $2,000 bail. He allegedly paid his store bills by issuing money orders.
In Placerville California at night two men fled through an orchard after shots were fired from the ridge. John Wittmer and Sam Martin saw them break cover and investigators set a watch on the hill. A man believed to be Case possibly headed for Chinatown amid opium rumors. A convict reportedly passed Eldorado en route. Mme Humbert's hearing featured defiant claims of family integrity and a flat denial of wrongdoing as adjournment loomed.

Beaudry, Yonkers city attorney, his family, and friends escaped as a baby Isabella was saved by a deck hand. The Celeste was towed to Port Morris and the Carroll’s captain denies fault.

A notice to show cause why the St. Louis Merchants Bridge Company charter should not be forfeited was received. Major Thomas J. Casey of the Army Engineer Corps is to serve the notice in St. Louis. The order, from General Gillespie via the Secretary of War, demands action by Sept. 4.

New York Aug 8 William J Mc Tan assistant secretary to Mayor Low was slashed in the thigh by a member of a crowd on Catherine Street where he protested taunts aimed at a decrepit beggar. Lieut Snyder with Moran was cut on the neck but not seriously hurt. Moran fought the assailants and Mc Tan knocked one attacker down before the fray continued.
Windewater Virginia August 8 a partly successful Langley airship experiment from a house boat on the Potomac ended with the machine striking the water under full engine power. The craft traveled about forty miles an hour before it sank and was recovered badly damaged. Repairs will be required before another test.
A fire destroyed two valuable horses Bernardo owned by Wilson Hishelm of Cleveland and Deimsr owned by Joseph Smith of Brooklyn. The blaze at the Empire City Trotting track near Yonkers endangered the racing stables and many high priced horses were led from stalls to safety before fire crews halted the flames. Authorities suspect an incendiary act behind the fires on Aug eight and the preceding Sunday night.
New York, Aug 8 Charles Gould son of the millionaire car magnate and his wife were thrown from their auto in front of their Bayside home. They were unconscious two hours later with suspected internal injuries and multiple bruises. The car struck a runaway horse, killing it, then crashed down a slope to the road.
