Deputy sheriff Robert D. Meldrum shot and killed a man named Thissel at the Tomboy mine boarding house in Bavage basin five miles from Telluride Colorado. Thissel challenged Meldrum with abusive language and punched him. Meldrum fired, Thissel died shortly after. Meldrum and soldiers were sent for arrest. Meldrum had recently moved from Wyoming and served as deputy sheriff on guard duty at the mine during the strike.
