Train Crashes Into Wagon Near Irvington Victims Identified

Sherman township farmer Warmbeter driving home from Algona was struck when a southbound passenger train hit his wagon near Irvington. His younger daughter Dora died that night. Warmbeter and elder daughter survived, while the train crew and officials aided the injured and coroner's inquest cleared the railroad.

Hay Burner Is Arrested in Farm Theft Case

Fred Smith, charged again with haystack arson for J A Slapsop near Whittehave, is in county jail awaiting grand jury action. He rode a pony from Plum Creek to the Shilts farm, then returned to Hobart. Smith pleads not guilty. evidence includes footprints. Armory Rent Specs Set by Iowa Guard Board

Captain Chubb outlines Iowa National Guard armory specifications to justify a maximum annual state allowance of 6004. Requirements include a 60 by 80 ft drill hall, fireproof brick stone or block construction, internal heating, offices and assembly rooms, locker and storerooms, water closets baths and an inside rifle range. Dimensions are minimum and may be increased. The plan envisions stock company funding with a 609 by the state per year rent, a $10,000 building fund, and stock subscriptions to raise the capital.

Pioneer: Robert Henderson Dies in Colorado

News of pioneer Robert Henderson an early settler from Riverdale Township reaches Algona. Born May 16 1840 in Delaware County New York he carried mail between Algona and Spirit Lake and later to Blue Earth and Worthington. He served as a Union cavalry member from 1861 to 1864, married Nancy Norton in 1864 and had six children. He moved to Delta Colorado four years ago with health failing from stomach cancer. Local note includes Iowa State College short courses on grain and stock judging and dairy topics with speakers from Wisconsin Minnesota Illinois and Canada.
