He confides to a stranger that he is a ticket of leave convict who faced a false crime charge, endured prison and transport, and endured a broken life until love and patience offered a possible new start.
A couple meets outside a church after a sermon and shares a comically awkward, earnest engagement moment on icy steps. He slips on the ice, she helps him up, and their mutual declarations of love unfold with humorous, tender missteps. They temper the misfortune with steadfast affection and proceed toward a family home together.
A reminiscence recalls Sojourner Truth’s struggle with smoking and prayer, noting her courage to quit tobacco in old age. Friends praised her victory and urged others to imitate her temperance example within Methodist circles and anti slavery memory.
Carroll Jones, about 19, reportedly intoxicated, shot and killed Harry Boor, also about 19, in front of Garbee’s auction on Maitr Street.
