Universal presents You're a Sweetheart with George Murphy and a Broadway star in a romantic musical. A comic bodyguard and an all star cast headline a lavish song and dance spectacle described as a topnotch musical triumph. Show runs Sunday and Monday.
Unionville Rotary Club members attended Princeton club's noonday luncheon on Tuesday. VC Rose Jr chaired the Vocational Service Committee and presented a study on the roles of Rotary committees and how citations relate. Princeton plans a return visit to Unionville on March 10 to share their program.
The Central City Literary Society held a Friday program featuring a debate on the negative side. A mock Irish Templeton versus Templeton will be aided by learned counsel and witnesses with Judge FE Simmons presiding. Music will also be part of the program expected to attract a large audience.
The annual Hello America event will be held on ERRACY 28 at 1030 Central Standard Time in Washington City. The National WFW organization will host 145 members of Congress with Commander-in-Chief Scott P Squyres delivering the membership obligation to a nationwide class of recruits. United States Senator William G McAdoo of California will speak, and music will be provided by the nation’s top orchestras and bands.
State board orders removal of about 55 elderly from Putnam County old age pension rolls. Officials say the move is final with no recourse and will leave around 300 on the list after others are dropped. James A Little longtime Keokuk resident died at his home 814 Fulton Street in Keokuk on Monday February 7. The body was moved to Unionville for burial with a service at his home and graveside rites led by Rev. O C Gross. He was born in Hittaburg Missouri and married Myrtle Moutcheon in 1894. survivors include wife, three children, a sister and a brother. He worked as a hardware salesman for A Weber Co and Witte Hardware Co and was a member of several fraternal organizations. Burial in Unionville.
John McClanahan died in St Louis last Thursday at age 78 pending his May birthday. His body was flown to Milan for burial Saturday. He lived in St Louis for over forty years and is survived by three daughters Mrs Giles, Mrs Burr, and Mrs Martin, all of St Louis. His widow was sister to the late Mrs Cora Swett of Unionville.
Elbert Houston son of Walter and Mrs. Houston and Beulah Ingersoll daughter of Ston and Mrs. Ingersoll were married on Saturday February 12 at the Recorder's Office. Squire Charles Fowler officiated. Attendants were James Ingersoll and Keith Houston. They plan to live on a farm near Lucerne and are well regarded in the county's west end.
A city woman misread an invitation and arrived at a café at noon a day early for a luncheon and bridge session. She noticed another group of ladies present and, upon discovering the error, sat hidden, finishing her meal in silence while awaiting the next day’s event.
John S Cullum and his sons Elwin and Dean became owners of Kurtz Produce, located on East Main Street, after a purchase last week. They took possession Tuesday and plan to continue operations, selling produce and feeds, with a Friday sale at J S Cullum's home near Imonville. Kurtz had bought the business from H S Wishart two years ago and may move to Imonville.
A near capacity crowd watched a strong boxing program in Casa Loma pavilion sponsored by the Wilburn Odama American Legion post. The event included youths bouts and one wrestling match with several new matches announced for March 21 to showcase progress and foster boxing in the area.
A letter from Dan M Nee Collector of Internal Revenue Kansas City announces Deputy Collector George J Cameron will be in Unionville on Thursday February 17 to assist taxpayers with income tax returns. He will also help with Federal Social Security questions during his visit.
Warner FB Pollock, a student at Chillicothe Business College, fell unconscious last Friday noon and was rushed to a hospital. He recovered and is now believed to have no internal injuries and remained in bed at his home in Chillicothe.
A Des Moines Register incident describes Missouri trucker Lloyd Lawson fined for selling coal in Creaco Iowa. Sheriff Pederson accepts a coal fine, delivering 21,000 pounds to relief for distribution. A Malcom Iowa letter urges Missouri merchants to support truckers against punitive local measures.
The Jre Independents, a local basketball squad, have added players Wendell Raton Hob Warner and Morgan from Shewal Iowa and received help from Coach Lynn McHarg of the High School. They defeated Humphreys 42 34 in overtime and Mullan 87 36, beat Sewal 22 18, and plan two tournaments in Bloomfield March 1 2 3 and Glenwood March 19 11 12.
The annual operetta Paints and Patches, directed by Prof Robert Donaldson, drew a large crowd in the High School auditorium Tuesday night. The seventh and eighth graders delivered polished performances that impressed with talent usually seen in older students.
