Sinking of the Tuscania Takes Toll on Troop Transport
The first American troop transport to France, the Tuscania, was sunk off the Irish coast last Wednesday by a German submarine. About 2,000 aboard, with initial fatality estimates around 118, amid reports that 200 plus had been transported by January 1 and one lost. Rescue operations saved a number of soldiers, including Alva L. Beall of Greencastle. Officials promise ship protections and faster adoption of unsinkable design as recruits rally nationwide. Smallpox Quarantine Steps Taken After Local Case
One case of smallpox was discovered in town last week and the family placed under quarantine. No additional cases have developed, but the Board of Education required students not yet vaccinated to be vaccinated to head off any epidemic. Victory Bread rules set by Food Administration in Missouri
Missouri follows new Food Administration rules on wheat sales effective after February 1 with one exception. Housewives may avoid buying another cereal with every pound of wheat flour until February 15, using substitutes such as corn meal rice flour and oat products. Mixed cereal bread must contain five percent other cereals, rising to at least 20 percent by February 24. Manufacturers face 70 percent wheat flour limits for several products.
