Last night’s Faust at the opera house drew strong praise for its production, with George G. Wakefield as Mephisto winning particular acclaim. The roles of Faust, Valentine, and Marguerite also earned favorable notices for their performances.
Sheriff Hayes reports arrest of John Cooper in Council Bluffs Iowa for stealing about 5 000 pounds of sugar. Authorities moved him to face charges after a Tuesday dispatch and escort from authorities led to recovery of the goods.
John Joseph has bought the Logan and Farance building and will start tearing it down immediately to build an airdome occupying 56 by 70 feet between the laundry and Mrs Payton's millinery. The venue will seat seven or eight hundred with a 35 by 20 foot stage and bleacher seating. Intends to show stock companies only and expects crowds similar to a small theatre. Logan and Farance owe Swell building on the th side between Christy's grocery and Applegate's harness shop.
Earl Murphy of Dear Weat Liberty was knocked down while timbering with his brother last Tuesday. A limb swung back and struck him in the head, opening a large gash. A physician attended and dressed the wound. Murphy was unconscious for several hours.
A clipped sentence notes that Mr Murphy will probably be able to get at work soon, implying a return to duties in the near future with uncertainty about timing.
The Reverend Merrifield officiated Sunday at 4 pm as Dell Stuckey of Centerville Iowa and Mise Ethel Smith of this city became husband and wife at the home of Mrs. Dona Newell. Stuckey works on the Burlington railroad and is regarded as an excellent young man. The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Smith of near Unionville, has been employed in the local central office for nearly six years and will join her husband in Centerville. The couple have many friends in Unionville who extend congratulations.
A brisk sale last week led by livestock and household goods as Alvab McCoy sells stock with horses at up to 2.00 and chickens at 9.00 per dozen. Mules bring 160 each and sows around 28.50. The day was cold and rough but McElhinney kept the pace, with McCoy planning a move to California.
The township and city offices face upcoming elections with township officers including two street commissioners and the city posts of clerk attorney and aldermen from two wards. Voters are urged to thoughtful consideration of all candidates to uphold civic pride and good governance.
Mrs M J Scrivena and her daughter Mrs Meta Scrivens, longtime residents on the J C Triplett farm east of town, departed Tuesday to establish a new home in Pollock. For sale an old Trusty incubator in good condition. seller listed as Mrs Josh Dooley.
W L McKinley of FeitVille suffered injuries when a traveling log rolled down a hill and struck him above the shoulder and neck as he attempted to steady a log. He was unconscious briefly but a physician reported no broken bones and he is recovering. internal injuries feared but not confirmed.
Post Office moves to a new location near the Journal with modern improvements. Inspector Brownlow has arranged a corner site with quarter oak fixtures and high screens. Total cost about $3000 will overhaul offices, boxes, and delivery areas by March.
A small blaze in Summers Studio dark room caused about $10 in damage and destroyed over 1500 plates from a possible match dropped into a barrel of waste. Harry Johnson discovered the fire and extinguished it before the fire company arrived. Summers insured losses cover the incident.
The Boy Scouts form a clubhouse in the Christian church basement to serve as headquarters for social and business use. It opens to all boys over 12 and community youths, with a reading room, games, magazines, and a play area. Scout master Mr Budham will oversee operations.
The Cub Scouts express enthusiasm to expand participation and plan a supper in their club room as a community effort. Officers listed include Press George Callison as secretary Vahl Clawaeon as treasurer Ora Shelton.
Rhoda Haynes died at her home on Saturday evening February 8 1913 aged 77 years 10 months and 21 days after years of illness. She joined the United Brethren church five years ago and cared for orphans at home. Her husband predeceased her and she leaves two sons and two daughters with all but one daughter present in Oklahoma at the time. Funeral at the home Sunday evening at 5 o'clock conducted by Rev Dickson with burial in Haynes Cemetery.
Representative Valentine reports a busy week in Missouri politics with engrossment fights over House Bills 19 283 and 77. The County Unit measure faced delay from opposition and failed amendment while leaders Hays Barton Orr and Phelps shaped the debate.
