Jail Break Shootout Ends in Death and Wounding
An attempted jail breakout at Hiawatha Kan led to gunfire. Ernest Walace died from head and chest wounds, while Phillips, an armless inmate, was shot in the body. Sheriff N T Moore reported the incident as guards confronted the inmates as they attacked jailer M A Bartlow during dining-time.

Commercial Club Sets Trail Entrant Path and Road Plans
The Commercial Club met Tuesday night with many members present. They approved bills and discussed securing the trail route through the county from Newtown to Cedar Rapids via Centerville Ottumwa. Priority was to study contest entry and finalize actions by the county executive board.

Judge Lorenzo Jones presided a special two day session to handle cases including J O11. Doe Valentine who pled guilty to issuing a check with insufficient funds and received a two year term. The jury acquitted Frank Moss in a contentious property case. Fire Destroys Bill Hayes Home in Town
About 1 o clock this morning fire destroyed the Bill Hayes residence in the southeast part of town. Nearly all household goods were lost though partially insured. The blaze likely started from a stove in an adjoining room. the couple barely escaped with a sewing machine and a few small articles. Ownership by Sheriff Hayes noted. $500 on the house with some insurance on contents.

Death of John Watkins 71 in Eagle Point Oregon
John Watkins 71 died December 31 at his Eagle Point home. He was born September 24 1842 in Athens Ohio and left a wife four daughters one brother five sisters and eleven grandchildren. A former Justice of the Peace in Jackson County he served until his death. Funeral held at home conducted by Dr W W P Holt and with Grand Army of the Republic Central Point post honors at the grave. His sister Mrs Nancy Reed lives near West Liberty.

Stella Amber Worthington, born September 1, 1884, died January 2, 1914, at age 2 years 4 months and 26 days. Survived by husband Garvey Worthington, four children including Marie, Cecil, and Edward, mother Mrs Mary F Archer, and sisters Mrs Ira D Johnson, Mrs R F Hodges, and Mrs LR Smith. Funeral held at Worthington Baptist Church. she was a devout Christian.
