Initial reports say four hundred miners died in a massive explosion at two Monongah mines in West Virginia, with figures rising to about five hundred fifty as rescuers work through wreckage. Gas or afterdamp worsened conditions. many bodies disfigured or burned.
Elias Riddle trades store and livery in Allerton for Kansas land and plans move soon. Marriages include Beesher Shrivers and Kate Godfr. Reports of scarletina at Wm Olmstead home and various injuries, weddings and visits. West Putnam County Sunday School Convention draws crowds despite weather. Community notes include barns, trappers, sales, and planned move of Dr. E M Painter family to Unionville.

The Marshall Rational Bank at Unionville Missouri presents its balance sheet for December 8 1907. It lists assets including loans discounts overdrafts secured and unsecured U S bonds and currency specimens and notes of other banks. Liabilities show capital stock undivided profits and deposits with due to state banks and bankers and certificates of deposit. The statement is sworn by cashier N B Margiste and witnessed by notary A B Pratt and directors.
A bank advertisement urges readers to start a small account to build wealth and invest for future gains. It promotes a burglar proof vault safety deposit boxes for deeds notes wills and silverware and invites customers to visit a government supervised facility to read papers and write letters.
The state vs William See received a guilty verdict of insult with intent to kill and a two year penitentiary sentence. Sheriff Hayes and Deputy Robbins took him to the penitentiary Saturday. A special term is set for March 15, and indictments for illegal liquor sales were returned. Local notes mention travel, family visits, church dedication plans, and community events.
John D. Stargell died at his home southwest of Powersville at 10 o’clock Tuesday after a stomach ailment. The 55 year old veteran had been confined to bed for about two months. He is survived by a wife who died last spring and two sons and a daughter living on the home farm. Funeral services will be held at 4 this afternoon conducted by Rev. Bone, with burial at Wyreka cemetery. J D Stargell was a longtime local resident and farmer.
The current year taxes are due with a penalty to attach if unpaid by January 1 1908. The notice places the taxpayer at Middleton Bros office stating taxes owed to the city of Union ville.
