The first issue of Ukiah News announces its aim to inform and reflect, with independent nonpartisan stance, open letters to the editor, local news, weddings, and community events. Staff seek reader contributions and offer free initial delivery while building the paper's voice and coverage.
Ukiah’s first radio station KUKI at 1400 k.c. with 250 watts plans auditions to discover local talent and develop future stars. Bartley Sims says broadcasts will begin in two to three weeks, using AP service and local talent for on-air programs.
Margaret H. O'Brien widow of A R O'Brien, longtime editor of the Republican Press in Ukiah, welcomes The Ukiah News. She praises her husband’s fearless press, notes the new paper’s publication in the former building, and expresses confidence in a healthy, competitive local press and public interest in Mendocino county.
Miss May Anderson39?90 of 493 School street was treated by a local physician after being struck shortly after 6 p.m. by a car driven by Ker mit L. Rhone of West Standley street. She was crossing the north side of the intersection and not hospitalized. Police continue to investigate with no citation issued late yesterday.
Forrest Hughes Sales and Service at 6585 N State Street showcases the 1951 Studebaker with a 120 horsepower V eight and 7 to 1 compression. Factory notes strong reception for the Commander series as production expands toward 50 percent of output. Joe Ready reports hundreds visited since Thursday with brisk business and word spreading through demonstrations.
A rainy night did not dampen attendance at the El Rosario card party in honor of the Albertinum school. Sister Henrietta thanked the Ladies League of St. Mary’s parish and friends for their efforts benefiting the school. Attendees included business and professional people from across the county and local residents marking the Feast of St. Albert.
Bob Wilmeth and Bo Bunyan, workers at the Aldah Montgomery Ward store, escaped serious injury when their car overturned 12 miles from Geyserville en route to Fresno. Wilmoth suffered a compound nasal fracture and nose lacerations. Runyan was uninjured. Wilmoth was taken to Healdsburg for 20 stitches before continuing to Fresno. the 1937 Dodge coupe was wrecked.
At a recent luncheon, a businessman protested against out of town contractors. He jumped up declaring he did not like all the new people in town, noting he had lived there a year and a half.
State highway projects beneficial to the Redwood Empire and the Golden Gate bridge will be submitted to the California Highway Commission at a Sacramento hearing. T Fred Bagshaw, REA president, says congestion and traffic hazards remain and must be upgraded to meet current and future demand. Delegations from Empire counties and the bridge district are expected to attend. The Redwood Empire association and spokesmen meet monthly with the highway commission.
The Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in town opened its canvass to decide whether it will graduate from a mission church to a parish. Mission status brings diocese funding, while a parish is self supporting. The Rev Dr C C Long noted this is the first effort to advance to parish status in about 80 years.
The Ukiah Gas Department reports 250 new accounts this year, with superintendent Paul Ki Anderson announcing expansion plans. A 30,000 gallon propane storage tank foundation is under way, and a 10,000 cubic foot unit will be added to bring the system to five units serving residents and businesses. The growth outpaces the 1949 regional totals, driven by new residential subdivisions and population influx.
Ukiah DeMolay chapter met at the Masonic hall for its regular session to discuss the annual Christmas dance. The dance committee was appointed with Clark Beck as chairman and will meet Tuesday night to finalize the date and entertainment details.
The report notes McGoldrick was found guilty of the Ross slaying and sentenced to San Quentin. It also recounts an amateur radio exchange between Police Chiefs George Smith of Whittier and O C Smith of Ukiah, comparing jail arrests and career histories.

Audrie Long, 23, film star and daughter of Rev and Mrs C. 8. Long of Holy Trinity church Ukiah, leaves for Hollywood after a three week visit with her parents. She has led roles in Song of My Heart Tall in the Saddle Homicide for Three David Harding Counter Spy Trial by Jury Postoffice Investigator. Long previously starred on Broadway with Gregory Peck in Sons and Soldiers and played Dark Eyes and Let Us Be Gay with Gloria Swanson. She declined an interview, saying she was here for a rest and remains devoted to her work.
John F. McGoldrick, 26, found guilty of manslaughter by a Superior Court jury in Lilburn Gibson's court for the death of John S. Ross after a Willits tavern brawl on August 7. McGoldrick waived a deferment of sentence. Judge Gibson imposed 1 to 10 years in San Quentin State Prison. Trial heard conflicted testimony about the scuffle with motives of jealousy cited.
