Diamonds Turned Green by Atomic Reactor Claims

A Washington press release by the Atomic Energy Commission asserts it can transform ordinary diamonds into green stones through reactor radiation. The process reportedly changes color within 24 hours, potentially improving many stones including blue white diamonds and those with slight yellow tinge. A 27 carat champagne diamond is cited as an example of color improvement.

A press dispatch from Washington reports the Atomic Energy Commission will entertain requests for gem irradiations in its reactors. The process can alter diamond color from clear to green and, with heating, to brown. The AEC suspended applications in 1953 for policy study and will charge a fee when space allows. Local correspondence continues with the commission.
