Ukiah A city building inspector reports 1955 permits valued at 3 787 827 up from 1 799 840 in 1954 total permits 143 for new dwellings valued at 1 706 274. Fiscal year total construction 2 946 320 with monthly breakdowns through December 27.
Mendocino County grows to about 53 000 residents as of January 1. The California Taxpayers Association estimates a 4.2 percent rise in 1955 from January 1956 figures, with the 1950 census showing 40 854 and the 1955 gain around 2 120 people. The statewide population hits 13 465 000, a 27.2 percent rise since 1950 and 5.2 percent during the war years.
The Ukiah fire department reported 16.02 inches of rain from December storms, bringing the yearly total to 25.77 inches and topping last year’s final 25.58 inches. The two heaviest days fell on December 19 and December 22 with 3.85 and 3.98 inches respectively.
A permit was issued yesterday for a Safeway Store building at the corner of State and Gobbi streets. City Building Inspector Carl Hinds said the permit went to the San Francisco firm Wurster Bernardi and Emmon. Building value listed at 255,778 dollars excluding equipment, improvements and parking.
Attorneys for defendant Marion Merrill file a notice of intent to move for a new trial in a personal injury case in Mendocino County. The plaintiffs Elaine Walker and Marion Walker were awarded $100,000, the largest such award in the area. The accident occurred July 9, 1952 near Boonville, involving Mrs Walker driving. Counsel include J Adrian Palmquist and James E Busch for the Walkers, Charles Bell for Merrill.
Mendocino county grand jury yesterday indicted Imogene Yokum on a murder charge after a brief hearing. District Attorney Merle Orchard presented three witnesses. Yokum allegedly killed husband Donald Yokum, 33, with a 30-30 rifle in their Willits home following a dispute over sending four of five children to Sunday school. The shooting occurred Dec 6. Arraignment in superior court set for Friday. possible plea and trial date. Yokum is represented by John Golden. Preliminary hearing had been postponed due to storm. Witnesses included Vernon Shuster, Dr Robert Smalley, and Willits Police Chief Olan Greenwood.
Seven persons correctly identified last week’s Mystery Farm as the Johnson Brothers farm south of Ukiah. Winning Ukiah theatre tickets went to Hazel Elliott Hopland Mrs Vaughan Graham Erma Wright Mary Wright and Lucille Stiva. Tickets may be obtained at the Ukiah News office.
The Rev. Mark Pike, longtime Methodist pastor, died December 24 in Fresno where he led the Five Points church. Previously he led Ukiah Methodist from 1934 to 1940 and served in Woodland Reno Nevada and Sacramento before his Fresno tenure. Interment was yesterday in Sacramento.
Tax collector William T. Clow announced first installment collections reached a county record of about 2.361 million dollars, surpassing 1954’s 2.086 million. Utilities see about 40 thousand dollars less due to valuation changes. private individuals and firms pay more. Second installment due February 1 and delinquent April 10.
Ukiah hosts New Year events with the Ukiah Firemen’s Ball at Carl Purdy Hall 12th District Fairgrounds from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Music by Greatt’s group, refreshments served, dance chairman Henry Walters. Nearby house parties and Elks Club at Elys hall run 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. with Chuck Perry’s orchestra, hats and serpentine for guests, admission $1.00.
The city council awarded gasoline supply for 1956 to a Texas firm with a low bid of 2078 cents per gallon. Other bids included Standard Oil 2148, Shell Oil 2227, and Richfield 2150 cents per gallon. Koppers Company won the 85 foot electric transmission poles bid at 1554.60 dollars. J H Baxter offered 1994.25.

A U S Air Force helicopter landed at Ukiah Municipal Airport at 10:25 pm reuniting a Garberville family of six stranded by flood waters. Captain John Heller led the crew from Hamilton AFB rescuing Doris Jean 1 James Boyd 4 and Robert Ray 7 along with their mother Gene Scaife. The team had earlier flown another child and the mother to Ukiah. The children received medical care for dysentery at Mendocino County Hospital. The rescue mission involved community help and weather delays and followed other operations in Marysville Yuba City Antioch and Guerneville areas.
Dan Cupid issued 285 marriage licenses in Mendocino County led by June with 40 permits and September with 35. December adds 24 licenses in the final days, with various totals throughout the year from January to November.
James A. Compton, 52, of Des Rios, suffered fatal injuries when the Des Rios Laytonville bridge over the Eel River collapsed Tuesday around 1 p.m. He died shortly after arrival at Howard Memorial Hospital Willits. His body was taken to Anker Mortuary Willits.
Superior Judge Lilburn Gibson approves a preliminary distribution of Miss Emma Redemeyer estate totaling 200000. Seven heirs share the amount with Evelyn Yoote Gertrude White Whitney Redemeyer each to receive 33333.33 dollars and Hubert Fred Ernest L. Redemeyer Dorothy McConaha each to receive 25000 dollars.
Raymond R. Walsh 58 of Ukiah died Tuesday from a heart attack. A requiem mass will be said Friday at 10 a m at St Mary of the Angels with interment in Ukiah Catholic Cemetery. Rosary is set for 8 p m today at Zimmermann Mortuary. He was district sales manager for Standard Oil serving Mendocino Lake and Sonoma counties and active in local groups. Survivors include his wife Gladys, his mother Margaret Walsh, a son Thomas Walsh and a daughter Patricia Walsh.
An emergency session was called to inventory flood damage across the county. Officials estimate bridges and roads may total about one million dollars with 19 bridges affected and costs likely to require state and federal aid.
A survey lists eighteen bridges washed out or damaged along roads including Hearst Road Eel River bridge and Redwood Valley Russian River crossings with no travel permitted. Estimates range from several thousand to over one hundred thousand dollars with several repairs pending and some no estimate yet.
The Diamond District Boy Scouts of America relocate to 731 South State Street in J. L. Lindsey Real Estate office. The Sonoma-Mendocino Area Council thanks Berman for space and support as the program grows and more boys join leadership programs for citizenship.
