Japanese Red Army hijackers release more hostages

In Dacca the Japanese Red Army freed four more hostages from the hijacked jet while warning the withdrawal of nine Americans would continue. Japan said it could not meet the 6 p.m. EDT ransom deadline for 142 remaining captives as the gunmen threaten to execute hostages one by one unless demands are met.

Chapman trial recessed for ballistic scene recreation

The Warren Chapman murder trial paused as ballistics expert Mike Waller prepared to travel to Noyo Harbor to recreate the crime scene. Judge James Kleaver allowed the trip to help place witnesses and assess angles, with trial expected to extend into next week.

Oil spill closes Perkins Street near courthouse

A noon oil spill blocked Perkins Street between School and State after a test run of fuel oil in the courthouse furnace. Jack Hunt from maintenance said the leak, used during a fuel oil test, covered much of Perkins in front of the courthouse but did not reach the Perkins and State intersection.

SF firm plans to drill for oil near Manchester

A San Francisco based oil exploration company Griffin and Associates plans an exploratory well near Manchester. If productive, this could expand to 20 wells on 40 acres. Concorde test landings could resume at JFK in weeks

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit found the Port Authority guilty of illegal delay in adopting noise standards for the Anglo-French SST. The ruling lifts an 18 month ban on the Concorde and allows test landings to proceed while an appeal to the Supreme Court is pursued.

Paris Jet Hijacker Delivers Political Broadcast Demand

A lone hijacker armed with a pistol and grenade seized a Caravelle jet, shot a stewardess, and forced the Paris bound plane to return to Paris. He threatened to blow up the 100 aboard unless his political message was broadcast and demanded full fuel, promising to release 50 passengers if met. The aircraft carried 94 passengers and a six member crew.

Land cost could spark PG E rate hike says utility

SACRAMENTO UPI Consumers face a potential 90 million dollar rate increase if state lands gas costs rise to proposed levels. PG E officials testified for nearly three hours before the State Lands Commission as it weighs new rates charged to PG E by firms drilling on state lands in the Sacramento San Joaquin Delta. The commission delayed a decision amid strong criticism from oil companies, agencies and consumer groups. Two officials questioned using a gas producer as a consultant.
