Rusk Says US Is Prepared on China Nuclear Test

Secretary of State Dean Rusk said the United States is prepared for a possible early Chinese nuclear test. He noted Washington would announce findings publicly if such an explosion occurs and that allies have been briefed. UPI report cites officials warning the test could occur any time, though no firm details emerged.

Reapportionment Alarmed By Sen Collier In Crescent City

Redwood Empire delegates at Crescent City convention warned that Supreme Court rulings on one man one vote threaten northern California representation. Sen Randolph Collier said Los Angeles could gain 15 or more northern state senators, risking water and gas tax funds for rural counties. He forecast park acquisitions could devastate Del Norte County’s tax base and shift control to southern areas. A petition urged continued United Air Lines short haul service, while Simpson Timber warned Parks moves could cut thousands of jobs and 16,695 regional livelihoods.

Group Eight Conclave At Hobergs Resort

Bankers in Group Eight will convene at Hobergs Resort Lake County for their annual fall meeting on Saturday Oct 3. Democrats Gain In Mendocino County Voter Registration

Mendocino County voter registration rose from 19 827 at the primary to 22 041 per County Clerk Jim Broaddis. Democrats lead with 13 330, Republicans 8 206, and 505 decline to state. Democrats gained 1 698, Republicans up 452, decline to state down 124. County population estimated at 55 108.

Speeding Car Kills Worker On Golden Gate Bridge

SAN FRANCISCO UPI a car twice the speed limit struck and killed maintenance foreman Arthur S. Olgon 59 of Novato while his crew drilled holes behind traffic cones north of the toll plaza. Driver Kenneth Mark New 39 of Alameda said he aimed to set a speed record in his son's car and swerved to avoid the worker but hit Olgon.

Johnson Campaign Swing Boosts Goldwater Clash

President Johnson drew large crowds in a New England tour reaching Maine New Hampshire and Vermont with 300000 attendees. He assailed Goldwater urging Republicans to stay with him and defended his Vietnam stance while noting Ted Kennedy’s hospital recovery. He planned to fly to Omaha with NATO head Brosio to review air strategy before returning to Washington.

Car overturns injuring two youths near Ukiah

John Phelps seventeen of Ukiah escaped with scratches after his car at about sixty mph on N State Street south of Calpella overturned. Highway Patrol said Phelps tried to pass a vehicle when northbound, the second swerved and he lost control while braking. Passenger Anthony Malani of Ukiah received minor injuries.

Destruction of Files Probed by Miller

Rep William Miller demanded the State Department explain why records on government security risks in 20 cities were ordered destroyed. He said the files covered employees loyalty and character weaknesses such as drunkenness and homosexuality. The State Department said duplicates were destroyed for efficiency and denied destroying original security files. Miller cited executive secrecy and White House pressure to suppress findings before the election. He warned the Goldwater campaign could gain from what the files show.

Goldwater Attacks Johnson On Social Security In Ohio

Barry Goldwater rail campaign in Marietta Ohio condemned President Johnson as the chief enemy of Social Security. He touted his 12 year Senate record, aligned with Robert Taft Jr, and argued Medicare linkage harms Social Security while promising to respond to FBI riot reports with action.

S F Woman Hurt in Crash Near Boonville

Bette Winstock, 58, of San Francisco, sustained possible major injuries Monday evening when her car rear ended Claudia Walker’s, 16, of Boonville, on Highway 128 east of Boonville. The Walker vehicle slowed to turn left and waited for oncoming traffic. Winstock was taken to Ukiah General Hospital for treatment.

Fire Call for George Schowman to Mendocino County Hospital

On Monday at 6 54 PM emergency services responded to 410 West Henry Street for George Schowman. He was transported by ambulance to Mendocino County Hospital for treatment.
