Georgia Pacific's Ukiah particleboard plant will begin full production Sunday night with 63 workers on a three shift schedule starting in the graveyard shift. The plant plans a temporary curtailment after next Friday until inventory is sold, then resume production, as demand allows.
Gov. Ronald Reagan signed 19 measures including AB1650 to remove locks from public pay toilets in state and local buildings and SB1858 to shield unpublished reporter material from subpoenas. Other actions fund BART relief through 1977, boost driver insurance enforcement, ban pilot-light gas appliances after 1977, and require Spanish language contracts and education programs for Mexican American and Indian education.
In Mendocino County a 1620 acre forest and grass fire northeast of Laytonville, 10 miles up the Eel River canyon, was 90 percent contained by Thursday as 450 firefighters with state, county, and federal crews fought steep terrain. Authorities warned northeasterly winds could spark new outbreaks. two Ukiah aerial tankers stood by. One injury reported from firefighting efforts.
President Ford guided 800 delegates and 700 observers at the Washington Hilton in a bid to resolve inflation. Leaders blamed oil, weather, and corporate price hikes while debates split over wage price controls. Ford voiced confidence that sacrifice and discipline can lift the nation from its economic woes.
Sacramento reports the last private papers of Chief Justice Earl Warren reveal a long simmering dispute with Richard Nixon dating to 1946. Warren praised Voorhis, angering Nixon campaign staff who urged disavowal. The U S Court of Appeals reversed the murder conviction of Dr Geza De Kaplany serving life for acid killing of his wife in San Jose. It ruled the trial court erred by not holding hearings to determine his competence to plead and stand trial amid psychiatric evidence and a dramatic courtroom outburst.
