McCarthy Censure Backed On Two Counts by Senate Probe
A special committee unanimously recommended that Senator Joseph McCarthy be censured on two charges contempt of the Senate and abuse of an Army general. Nine-day hearings found further criticisms on three additional counts but not enough for censure. The plan calls for introducing resolutions when the Senate reconvenes on November 8 to act on the first censure against a senator in 25 years.

Forest Fire Crews Battle 14 Blazes in Mendocino County
Fourteen forest fires in Mendocino County including a 200 acre blaze in the Mendocino National Forest are being fought by 200 Forestry crews, prison honor farms, federal firefighters and volunteers. A log truck fire near Ukiah sparked several fires, destroying the empty vehicle and causing about 20 000 dollars in loss. Most other fires remained under control with federal crews directing effort and bulldozers active.

Deputy State Forester C W Fairbank announced the Jackson State Forest timber sale was awarded to Union Lumber Company of Fort Bragg after sealed bids opened September 22. The high bid was 12.80 per redwood and 9.00 per Douglas fir for about 4 600 Mbd redwood and 2 000 Mba ft Douglas fir across roughly 200 acres east of Fort Bragg in Chamberlain creek drainage. State forest personnel will mark all timber before cutting. Irving M Brazier and Charles R Bell of Ukiah join about 80 Central and Northern California attorneys for a Southern Pacific meeting in San Francisco to discuss railroad legal business.

San Francisco and Humboldt State junior varsity squads will meet in Ukiah on Friday October 22 in a charity game to establish a local fund for crippled children. Collision on North State Injures Driver in Fire Crash
A two car collision on North State street at 6:34 this morning left one vehicle destroyed and the other severely damaged by fire. Jackson D. Gumis, 74, of Ventura, rammed a parked car registered to Ralph H. Shultz of Ukiah in front of the Redwood truck service station. The impact ruptured the gasoline tank and ignited both cars. Gumis was hospitalized at Ukiah General for facial cuts and a bruised arm. He said he did not see the parked car.
