Rockefeller top aide bids testifies on aid offers

Vice Presidential nominee Nelson Rockefeller testified before the Senate Rules Committee that Spiro Agnew and John Ehrlichman asked him for financial help after leaving office but he refused. He said he did not contribute to Nixon’s reelection effort and denied using family funds to disrupt the 1972 Democratic National Convention. Rockefeller urged production boosts for inflation relief and tax incentives to spur investment and housing.

Mendocino social services face rising AFDC requests

Social Service Director Dennis Denny told county supervisors that Mendocino County faces an extreme hardship in aid to families with dependent children as AFDC cases reached a record 1,299. He warned of potential staff needs and budget concerns while noting food stamp caseload rose to 4,516 and a federal subvention program funds non support work.

Nixon suffers embolism in right lung amid health update

Long Beach California UPI reports former President Richard Nixon is diagnosed with an embolism in the right lung from a leg blood clot. Dr. John Lungren described the condition as potentially dangerous but not critical and outlined treatment with anticoagulants and a heparin drip while noting an extended hospital stay is likely.

Private citizens launch relief caravan for Fifi victims

In Tegucigalpa a group of private citizens organized a desperate rescue bid to reach San Pedro Sula, transporting food medicine and water in private cars and trucks. Rescue workers warned thousands could starve in 48 hours without supplies as water ran critically low and relief shipments were urged to accelerate.

Bomb threat evacuates Ukiah High School building

An anonymous call to Ukiah high school switchboard at 2 pm warned a bomb in the SEM building set to explode at 2 30. Principal Bill Tully ordered immediate evacuation. About 500 students and 25 teachers moved to the quad within 2 to 3 minutes. Officers and staff searched rooms and areas before students returned at 2 40 pm.

Bow and arrow restrictions proposed alongside shotgun rule

Avila urges equal limits for bows and arrows as supervisors consider amending the shotgun discharge ordinance. A 150 yard limit for shotguns near dwellings would replace the current 500 yard prohibition, prompted by a south coast trap club. Hearing set for 11 a.m. Tuesday to discuss the amendment.
