Ukiah Varsity Tops Fort Bragg in Big League Showdown

Ukiah’s varsity rugby team surged past Fort Bragg with a 20-0 first half lead and a decisive 13 yard total yard game. Standout players included Alvarado 143 yards on 17 carries and Cobb 68 yards on six attempts. The Jayvees also flashed speed and broke 65 yards for a score as Ukiah dominated both sides of the ball.

49ers Fortify Depth in Rout of Atlanta before Colts showdown

San Francisco routed Atlanta 38-7 as Gary Lewis and John Brodie led the offense. Coach Jack Christiansen praised backups like Douz Cunningham and Willard, saying their depth could drive a title bid if health holds. Seals and Penguins Play NHL Exhibition Tie

The Pittsburgh Penguins and California Seals, two of the Six new teams, fought to a 3-3 tie in Port Huron Michigan Sunday night. Lecaine, Mel Pearson and Al McDonald scored for Pittsburgh while Wally Boyer Ron Harris and Boehm replied for the Seals. Hank Bassen and Marv Edwards shared goaltending duties with 27 saves to 28.

Palmer Wins Thunderbird as Playoff Hopes Pale

Arnold Palmer fired a 69 to finish 283 in the Thunderbird Golf Classic at Clifton New Jersey. He waited over an hour to see if he held the lead, while Billy Casper faltered with five bogeys late. Jack Nicklaus and Charley Cody also missed key putts.

United Press International reports Notre Dame crushed California 41 8 while Houston routed Michigan State 37 7 in a setback for the defending 1965 champion. UCLA improved to 2 0 with a 40 8 win over Pittsburgh. Houston’s Warren McVea and Dick Woodall spearheaded a 416 yard total offense.

Four Still in Flag Chase In Frantic AL Race

In the tight American League pennant chase Boston Minnesota Chicago and Detroit race to next Sunday's finale. Jim Lonborg and Dean Chance both won Sunday and may duel again to decide the flag. Minnesota beat the Yankees 9-4 as Chance notched his 20th win while Lonborg had 21st in a 11-7 Boston victory.

Giants Fail to Score Off Perry in Narrow Loss

Giants again fail to provide ample run support for Gaylord Perry who drops to 15-4 after a five inning start. PittsburghReliever Fryman strikes out Willie McCovey with two on in the ninth as the Pirates win 2-1. McCovey had homered with the bases loaded the day before in an 8-4 win. Perry allowed only three earned in 67 innings before Maury Wills’ run and a later error sealed New York’s fate in a tense late game.
