Big Three Day Run At Mendocino Fair Draws Huge Interest

Kenneth Ornham of the Floriculture and Arts and Crafts building previews the Mendocino County Fair and Apple Show exhibit space, expecting 14 000 square feet to overflow with floriculture displays centered on a mural loaned by the Mendocino County Chamber of Commerce. The event emphasizes amateur participation, expanded arts and crafts, and a Sunday parade with six Granges and four Farm Centers represented.

County Clerk Seeks Extra Election Clerks

The County Clerk seeks additional election clerks and substitutes to fill last minute vacancies. Applications are available at the County Clerk's office in the Court House or from Willits city clerk Emma Lou Alcott and Fort Bragg city clerk Ina Backlund, with mail-out options upon request. Pay scales for election officers are listed by precinct registration totals, and 675 officers are needed to run 122 boards.

County Plans Trails and Parks for Mendocino County

County planning commission held the first public hearing on a master recreation plan featuring a 125 mile public riding and hiking trail from Sono ma county to the old Bell Springs road near Humboldt. Other elements include winter sports near Anthony Peak, eleven wayside rest stops on major highways, and proposed rights of way to coastal beaches at Westport Abolobidia 10 Mile Creek Caspar Salmon Creek and Haven's Neck.

Fleming Given Dishonorable Discharge

A court martial found Lt. Col. Harry Fleming guilty of collaboration with the Communists in Korea and sentenced him to a dishonorable discharge with forfeiture of pay. The sentence, pending approval by the secretary of the Army, could have carried life imprisonment. Fleming, decorated for service in Korea by the U S and South Korea, heard the sentence without flinching.

Senate Leaders Delay Recall on McCarthy Censure

Senate leaders signaled the recall to consider censure charges against Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy may be delayed by several days. Senate Secretary J. Mark Trice noted ongoing consultations with Republican Leader Knowland and Democratic Leader Johnson as a six member committee nears a final report with a noon deadline for printing.

Dulles Speech Promises Broad Policy Review at UN

Secretary of State John Foster Dulles will address the United Nations General Assembly to outline U S plans for peaceful atomic energy and a comprehensive review of foreign relations. He is to discuss Far East issues with Australian Foreign Minister Richard Casey and address Quemoy and Tachien islands concerns. The speech also touches on Eisenhower’s atoms for peace initiative and an international agency for peaceful atomic uses despite Soviet nonparticipation.

Train wreck injures twenty near Santa Fe

The Santa Fe transcontinental San Francisco Chief derailed at 70 mph near Knightsen California injuring 20 of 191 aboard with no fatalities. Nine cars left the tracks while several leaned against a 50 foot bank. observers called it miraculous as no major injuries occurred.

County Registration Totals Revealed for November Election

County Clerk Tames Broaddus announced final registration figures for the November 2 election totaling 29,966. Breakdown shows 9,047 Republicans, 11,314 Democrats, 553 undeclared, 45 Independent Progressives, and seven Prohibitionists. Registration in 1953 stood at 20,640 with 8,997 Republicans and 11,021 Democrats.

Sailor Dies From Hydrogen Bomb Fallout On Bikini Voyage

Aikichi Kuboyama radio operator aboard the tuna boat Fortunate Dragon died in Tokyo after radiation from the Bikini Atoll H-bomb test. He was 40, the oldest of 23 crewmen dusted by fallout, with doctors not allowed to treat him in the United States. His death followed a prolonged illness involving heart, liver, and jaundice complications, and his condition worsened despite coma and treatments.
