A car bomb in northwest Washington killed two people including Orlando Letelier, 44, a former Chilean foreign and defense minister and ambassador to the United States during Salvador Allende’s government. Escape sparks riot at California Youth Authority facility
Fourteen inmates escaped into a nearby cornfield triggering a riot by about 200 youths at the detention complex east of Los Angeles. One correctional officer was critically wounded and another severely beaten. Guards from three counties, aided by a helicopter, swept the field at dawn as searches continued.

Fishing boat Anne swept by fire west of Fort Bragg
The 63 foot fishing boat Anne from Longview Washington was swept by a fire 60 miles west of Fort Bragg early today. Two crewmen Ted Howes and Bill Goodrich were rescued by the fishing boat Outlaw. The fire started from an oil stove and destroyed the wooden superstructure. the steel hull remained afloat with 10 tons of frozen albacore aboard.
