Kissinger push toward Rhodesia settlement gains pace

Tanzanian President Nyerere voiced approval of Kissinger's shuttle talks on Rhodesia and predicted a formal acceptance of majority rule by Ian Smith soon. A constitutional conference could be set in London within months, with a provisional government and ceasefire looming. Kaunda and other frontline leaders weigh their own accord as Kissinger presses for progress.

Chilean ex-minister killed in Washington car bombing

A car bomb in northwest Washington killed two people including Orlando Letelier, 44, a former Chilean foreign and defense minister and ambassador to the United States during Salvador Allende’s government. Letelier had lived in Washington and earlier served as a consultant to the Inter-American Development Bank. Senator James A. Abourezk commented on the case.

Escape sparks riot at California Youth Authority facility

Fourteen inmates escaped into a nearby cornfield triggering a riot by about 200 youths at the detention complex east of Los Angeles. One correctional officer was critically wounded and another severely beaten. Guards from three counties, aided by a helicopter, swept the field at dawn as searches continued.

Vital water meetings set for Oct 7 and 15 in four counties

Two crucial meetings on Marin Sonoma Mendocino and Humboldt water supply are planned. Oct 7 in Santa Rosa at 7 p.m. at the Veterans building will be chaired by Wayne MacRostie with a DWR progress report. Oct 15 in Ukiah at 10 a.m. will be chaired by Ernie Banker to discuss pooling water resources and input to Gov Brown. Marin Municipal Water District is invited.

California DA Association to hold tiny counties conference in Fort Bragg

The California District Attorney's Association will host a small counties conference at the Vista Manor Inn in Fort Bragg from September 30 to October 2. About 70 district attorneys' office representatives from across the state are expected. The program features Judge Arthur Alacon on sentencing, Dennis Lempert on white collar crime, and Clayton DeVega on probation revocation hearings. Panels include Judge Timothy O'Brien and James Mercer on sentencing procedures, SB 42 discussion with Lowell Jensen and Richard Inglehart.

Fishing boat Anne swept by fire west of Fort Bragg

The 63 foot fishing boat Anne from Longview Washington was swept by a fire 60 miles west of Fort Bragg early today. Two crewmen Ted Howes and Bill Goodrich were rescued by the fishing boat Outlaw. The fire started from an oil stove and destroyed the wooden superstructure. the steel hull remained afloat with 10 tons of frozen albacore aboard.

Room and board payments tied Ford golf trips to U.S. Steel lodge

UPI reports U S Steel senior lobbyist says the firm paid room and board for at least two Ford golf visits to the Pine Valley Golf Club lodge in New Jersey when Ford was a congressman. Whyte says U S Steel covered caddy fees and maintains guest records in a limestone mine in Annandale Pennsylvania. Ford and Whyte are long time golfing partners. ethics rules and tax issues are noted, with Ford’s roles in 1964 and 1968 outlined.
