Firemen Parade Lights Up State Convention

Firemen from across the state gathered at the Palace Hotel for the 34th annual convention week end events. Ukiah fire department staged a controlled burn of the Hog an Surplus store on State street as visiting members watched, drawing large crowds before a downtown parade featuring firefighting equipment civil defense units and floats.

Willits Vehicles In Collision At Underpass

Albert Stevens in a Chrysler sedan traveling north at about 55 mph was rear ended by Lester Elledge Jr in a Chrysler club coupe about 300 feet north of the underpass. Elledge, going home at about 60 mph, could not stop and veered off the highway into an embankment causing fence damage. both drivers uninjured.

A caller reported a car on fire at State and Smith streets at 10 45 p m Thursday prompting Ukiah fire engines to rush to the scene The trucks rolled out and then returned after extinguishing the flames without further incident

Willow County to Award $115000 Water District Contract

Willow County Water District plans to award a $115000 improvement contract for 8000 feet of mains a 200 gallon storage tank and three new pumps. Bid openings set for 1 p m Monday with district manager George Sholin and consultant Frank B Sarles. Bond issue approved June 19.

The 30th annual Mendocino County Fair and Apple Show in Boonville hosts Hilo Hattie and troupe opening night at Apple Hall. Brown calls for combined state hospital reforms

San Francisco attorney general Edmund G. Brown urged the governor and Legislature to join a drive against abuses at state mental hospitals. Hearings at Modesto State Hospital followed reports of cruelty and mismanagement. Senate findings supported the charges, while Assembly findings downplayed them. Dist. Atty. Frank S. Pierson said he will seek indictments for mistreatment of patients, naming no employees. Two workers were suspended.

Hospital superintendent denies Mendocino probe

Acting Mendocino State Hospital superintendent Dr. William M. O'Brien said he knows nothing of an investigation at the Tal mage institution. Judge Twain Michelsen announced action after a written complaint from former patient Detryy Dempsey of Oakland alleging brutality at Mendocino and Agnews. The letter cites a June 16, 1955 incident in which Wong Loy, a 57 year old Stockton patient, died from a ruptured liver after a scuffle with attendant William Heney Carter, 43, who was summoned for questioning.

City Attorney to File Answers on Two City Suits

Utah City Attorney Wayne Burke plans to answer a suit seeking 22 450 from the city for a San Jose contractor’s gas and water main project payment alleged due last year. The June 19 1956 suit filed by Raymond F. Garrett says the city paid 40 349 94 for the job with 2 885 04 for backfill and notes a contract claim tied to lineal feet rather than cubic yards.

Fire alarms and home blaze reported in local area

Fire department logs show a false alarm at State and Smith streets at 10 45 p m and a real blaze at 1142 North Oak the home of Clare Beck in Chesterfield starting 11 22 am. Firefighters contained the incident and no injuries were reported.
