California Chamber President to Speak in Ukiah

California State Chamber of Commerce president Carl F. Wente will speak at the North Coast Council meeting in Ukiah October 1. The dinner at 6:30 p.m. will be followed by afternoon committee sessions on agriculture, industry, highways, natural resources, taxation, and travel and recreation. About 200 representatives from seven counties are expected. the event shifts from a noon luncheon to an evening program.

Rev Oran Bollinger Becomes Ukiah Church Pastor

Rev Oran Bollinger who served the Christian church of Ukiah as guest minister in 1948 has been invited and now established as pastor. He first came to Ukiah in 1948 to fill in for six months, stayed over a year, then returned to Kentucky for studies before service. He later served two years as a chaplain in France. The Bollinger home is at Fresno and his family Mrs Bollinger and two children reside at 800 West Standley Street.

Pope Gains in Fighting Illness

Pope Pius XII, 78, advised to rest and cut activities after hiccup spells and fatigue from a heavy September schedule. Doctors say no alarm, but he canceled a speech to pilgrims in Castle Gondolfa as he conserves strength. Farm Advisor Welcomes New 4 H Assistant

Kenneth Zamzow, 24, arrived in Ukiah to take over as Mendocino county's first full-time 4 H adviser for 15 clubs. A Gilroy native, he graduated from Oregon State College in 1952 with animal husbandry, then two years in the army with the veterinary corps, and he expressed enthusiasm for working with local residents.

Underhill Sues Marin Thomas Over Timber Trespass

L. B. Underhill sues Marin Mann Thomas owner of the Mann ranch northwest of Ukiah for trespass alleging entry on timber land, damaged fencing valued at 850 dollars, cut and took 116 redwood and 8 fir trees worth 4000 dollars, seeking treble damages totaling 53,550 dollars plus costs. Doctor Florence Olive Austin Dies at Ukiah General

Dr. Florence Olive Austin, 61, physician and psychiatrist on Mendocino State Hospital staff since 1953, died unexpectedly at Ukiah General Hospital after a heart ailment. Funeral arrangements by Zimmerman Mortuary. Survived by her brother Fred H. Austin of Calais Texas and an aunt in Oklahoma. Austin had a long career in private practice and state hospital work, with world travel noted.

Sandelin to Attend Breakfast With President Eisenhower

Walter Sandelin accepted an invitation from Ronald Button to attend a breakfast with President Eisenhower in Los Angeles on Friday morning September 24 at 7:15 in the Pacific ballroom of the Hotel Statler. Edward Galli On Maneuvers on Czech Border

Sgt Edward T Galli son of Mr and Mrs Mike Galli Fort Bragg California returned to Ansbach Germany from field maneuvers with the 793rd Field Artillery Battalion near the Czechoslovakian border. He is a cook in Service Battery testing firepower and combat efficiency during training. Overseas since April 1952 he worked for Union Lumber Co before entering the Army in August 1951.

Fort Bragg Boy Held for Heifer Calf Theft

An 11 year old Fort Bragg youth is jailed in the county juvenile home on grand theft malicious mischief and shooting in a case involving a 500 pound white faced yearling heifer on the Perry Short ranch five miles east of Fort Bragg. He is also charged with firing a .22 rifle slug into a Buck's Bar window in Caspar on September 1.

A fire at Crofoot Mill near the Forks caused slight damage with origin listed as unknown under sorting chains. A later 7:50 a.m. false alarm occurred at a call box on the east side of Yokago School at Oak and Seminary avenues.

Senate housing investigators testified that Senator John J Sparkman did not unduly influence FHA loan approvals. Two men linked to a large Indianapolis and other city windfall denied his involvement, while witnesses cited gossip about a top heavy loan. The committee called the allegations rumor and gossip and noted no wrongdoing by Sparkman.

Man Injured When Car Leaves Road Near Longvale Bridge

Arthur N. Tracy aged 44 of Ukiah sustained minor injuries yesterday at 2 20 PM after the car he drove left the Redwood highway bank near the Longvale bridge. Officer John O’Brian of the California Highway Patrol cited him for excessive speed and drunken driving. Tracy was taken to Howard Memorial Hospital by Willits ambulance.

Hereford Breeders Schedule Third Ukiah Bull Sale

The third annual bull sale by the Redwood Empire Hereford Breeders Association will be at the 12th District fairgrounds on Monday November 8. Fifty bulls from Marin Sonoma Mendocino Del Norte Lake and Humboldt counties are entered after inspection to ensure breeding standards and range readiness.
