89 Cent Tax Hike Sought in Ukiah Unified District

Ukiah Unified voters head to polls from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to decide a proposed 89 cent rise in the district tax rate from 2.86 to 3.75 per 100 assessed valuation for five years 1967 68 through 1971 72. The board cites rising costs and enrollment as factors while noting state aid declines. A simple majority is required.

Manslaughter Charge Filed Against Lin Ford

Ukiah Justice Court issued a warrant for Lin Ford aged 39 a well known heavy equipment operator and ordered him to appear for arraignment Wednesday at 11 a m. He faces a misdemeanor manslaughter charge in the death of Bill Wolf project engineer at Coyote Dam. Wolf died from injuries after Ford s sports car was struck by a truck during a Aug 15 collision on Highway 20 near a bridge. Ford was making a U turn when the crash toppled the car into a ravine trapping both men.

Drunk Driving Cases Mark Weekend Law Enforcement

Several Ukiah area residents faced charges after weekend incidents. Jack Lee Molina a 28 year old drummer was arrested Friday in Ukiah on drunk driving and driving with a suspended license with bail set at 550 dollars. Dennis Dunsing 24 and Theodore King 21 both of Ukiah were arrested on a charge of furnishing liquor to a minor on Marina Drive at Lake Mendocino. Clara C Paul 38 of Willits was sentenced to 66 days in county jail or a 330 dollar fine for drunk driving and possessing no license. James Alex Keaner 23 of Willits was arrested Sunday on a Little Lake Justice Court warrant for drunk driving. Raymond Johnson 46 of Ukiah was arrested Sunday by highway patrolmen and charged with drunk driving on Burke Hill.

Widow challenges DMV over revoked license in Point Arena case

An 89 year old widow Jennie Arnold testified she had few traffic citations since 1919 and argued the DMV acted improperly after a May 9 probe in Fort Bragg led to license revocation. Her attorney argued against the DMV director’s order while testimonies emphasized lack of transportation alternatives and lifelong driving. Judge Winslow promised a ruling this week.

Juveniles Arrested On Marijuana Charge At Fort Bragg Area

Three juveniles were placed in juvenile hall after being arrested on suspicion of marijuana possession. Two suspects are 17 and one is 16. traces of marijuana were found in cigarettes. Adults arrested with them include Earl Walsh 20, Lawrence Hoaglen 18, William Shango 19, and Swan Johnson 19. deputies investigate weekend burglaries at Shelton’s Little Deal and Hopper’s Corner.

Astronauts Conrad and Gordon Return Home After Space Mission

Astronauts Charles Pete Conrad and Richard F Gordon return to Houston after a Cape Kennedy splashdown. Their NASA2 plane landed at Ellington Air Force Base at 1155 a m EDT. They recall the mission from lift off to splashdown and say it was fun.

Two Ukiahans Jailed For Petty Theft

Bobby Pugh and Michael Daniel Jarvis both of Ukiah began 30 day jail terms after pleading guilty to reduced petty theft charges for crimes on September 11. They were arrested on burglary charges but entered guilty pleas to theft.

Four Hurt In Ukiah Area Vehicle Mishaps

Four people were injured in separate Sunday crashes around Ukiah. Lela Peaslee of Sonoma was slightly hurt when a tire blowout forced a southbound car into the northbound lane. A six year old, Daniel Niesen, was injured on N State Street when another car turned left in front of his vehicle. Floy Lee and Louise Donahue suffered injuries in a one car wreck near the Sonoma County line when Ford Lee lost control on a curve and hit an embankment.

Thant Says He May Stay Through December Assembly

Thant indicated he would remain as secretary general until the end of the General Assembly in December if needed, saying he would be ready to serve until a successor is agreed. He again refused to offer himself for re election to a new five year term when his current tenure ends November 3.

Train Kills Ukiah Woman at Crossing Near Senool Way

A 50-year-old Ukiah woman, Frances Butler Wright of Vichy Springs, died when her station wagon was struck by a westbound Northwestern Pacific freight train at a West Road crossing. The crash occurred at 8:30 a.m. as Wright returned from visiting her mother. witnesses said the wig wag signal and warning whistles were functioning. Engineer Dick E. Sieg said the train, traveling 25 mph, did not see the car until it was on the engine. Wright had managed the resort for 10 years.

Open Housing Civil Rights Bill Blocked in Senate

The Senate blocked action on the Johnson administration housing civil rights bill, ending a string of civil rights gains. Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield abandoned House-passed legislation after failing to stop a filibuster coalition. Cloture motions fell short of the two-thirds requirement, with votes of 52-41 and 54-42.

Northwestern California remains cloudy today with a fair and warmer Tuesday. Ukiah reports 77 today and 44 tonight as small craft warnings persist for northwest to north winds of 25 to 35 knots along the coast.

Ukiah Men Charged In Malicious Mischief

Howard Chambers and David G. Hollister of Ukiah were arrested by Ukiah police on malicious mischief charges. Chambers held on bail of 1100 dollars. Hollister also charged in the breaking of windows.
