Timber trespass suit seeks $346000 in Mendocino-Humboldt area

P. E. Whitten of Oakland files a trespass on realty suit against Thompson Creek Timber Co and others for alleged illegal cutting of 1,948,220 board feet of fir timber valued at $48,705.50 from land west of Highway 101 near the Humboldt county line. He seeks treble damages totaling $146,166.50.

Pickup Driver Drifts, Crashes Into Power Pole

A GMC pickup driven by 19 year old Robert Reed of Potter Valley veered off Potter Valley road around midnight Thursday, striking a power pole at about 40 mph. Reed woke on impact with his foot on the brake and a passerby took him to a nearby telephone to report the crash.

Ukiah Hopland Russian River Channel Hood-Damage Repair Starts

Flood damage repair on the Russian River channel between Ukiah and Hopland began this week under a Federal Civil Defense Administration funded project. Contracts totaling 122670 were awarded to four firms with a fifth pending. Arthur B Siri Co of Ukiah received 77330 for major work, others went to Eckley Construction Reno 23400 Reed and Tuttle Ukiah 6240 and Pete Barretta Healdsburg 5700. Work is emergency repair, not long-term improvement, with nine projects on 24 river properties and completion targets within 60 days for several contracts. A longer stabilization program is planned for next year.

Registrations Closes After Late Rush for November 6 Ballot

County Clerk Jim Broadsus notes a steady rush of last minute registrations at the county clerk’s office for the November 6 election. While exact totals are not yet available, officials expect the number to surpass the 1954 figure of 200,871. The office recorded 361 registrations yesterday, with 203 during the day and 158 at night, plus about 175 mail registrations from across the county. Cancellations and double registrations are anticipated, and a full party breakdown must be reported to the California secretary of state by October 2.

George Dodge Dies Suddenly at Boonville Home

George Dodge 40 a Pacific Gas and Electric service agent and Boonville resident for eight years died suddenly at his home last night. Funeral services are set for 10 a.m. Monday at Welts Funeral Home Santa Rosa with military services at Golden Gate cemetery. Survived by wife Dorothy and six children, all of Santa Rosa. Native of Mendocino. He belonged to Abell Lodge 146 F and AM Ukiah, National Riflemen’s Association, Pacific Service Employees Association, and Disabled American Veterans.

Bound and Gagged Missing SF Housewife Found in Desert

Evelyn Latham, 51, missing from San Francisco, was found bound and gagged beside a desert highway near El Centro. She blamed Mrs Beatrice Winn, 57, and Lucille M Whisenand, 36, and a Mexican woman for kidnapping and burying her alive. Winn and Whisenand were jailed on kidnapping and attempted murder charges as Latham recounted a nightmare ordeal involving threats to her four year old.
