Labor presses Ford at economic minisummit

Labor leaders urged an end to tight money and high rates, demanded tax shifts, and a curb on big business profits during the second minisummit on the economy. Ford announced $65 million for high unemployment areas with public jobs, plus $350 million and about 170,000 jobs planned for winter.

Mendocino College semi finalist in liberal education grant

Mendocino College enters its second year and is named a nation wide semi finalist among 183 institutions for a Change in Liberal Education grant. USC UCLA and other California colleges are also in the running for a share of the 100000 prize. A board action week included staffing, degrees, and enrollment updates. The Bartlett pear crop in Mendocino County totaled 38587 tons this year, down from 50560, with 34490 tons shipped for canning and 4097 tons packed for fresh sale. Harvest ran Aug 1 to Sept 3.

Debris Found From Missing Sea Trawler Near Fort Bragg

Coast Guard cutter recovered debris identified as from the fishing boat Sea Trawler missing since Tuesday noon with two Moss Beach men aboard en route to Half Moon Bay. Debris found 20 miles southwest of Fort Bragg, five miles south of last sighting, and flown to San Francisco. Search focuses on locating the lifeboat and two fishermen Jose Delago and Thomas Bettencort.

Burning permits banned in Mendocino County

All burning permits in unincorporated Mendocino County are suspended until further notice due to extreme fire conditions. Acting State Forester Michael O Shian announced the ban, effective at 3 p.m., citing dry grass and forests, strong winds, and reduced CDF staffing as summer firefighters return to school.

Conductor failure cuts power to Ukiah area homes

Electrical service to 343 homes south of Ukiah was interrupted briefly this morning due to a Cunningham Road conductor failure. PG E district manager Bud Randall reported outages mainly on Cunningham and Norgard Lanes from 5:45 a.m. and full restoration except three by 6:30 a.m.

Ford denies deal with Nixon before Watergate trial

White House spokesman said President Ford does not intend to pardon Watergate defendants before trial and denied any prior communication with Nixon about a pardon. Officials noted no blanket pardon, only possible case by case consideration if requested, with no such requests on record.

Supervisors decline stand on Proposition 17 in Mendocino County

Mendocino County supervisors decided not to take a stand on Prop 17 the measure to halt the Melones dam on the Stanislaus River. Proponents want Wild Rivers protection while Stanislaus Merced resolutions urged opposition. Also sign concern at Fort Bragg Oak Street to Sherwood Road and winter road prep announced. Sun Oil geothermal permit appeal set for Sept 25 after planning commission 5-2 vote.
