Scrimmage Sets for Ukiah and Nearby Teams This Weekend

Ukiah aims to refine offense in a Saturday morning scrimmage at Piney against Piner High, with a junior varsity and varsity squad working in Anton Stadium. Fort Bragg Cubs visit at 8 p.m. while Humboldt State plays Alumni at Arcata. Ukiah hosts Fort Bragg later in league action seeking a second straight win after a 58-14 and 18-7 set of scores.

NCAA Gold Cup Set for Monza Style Race Night

Northern California Racing Association fans anticipate the First Annual NCAA Gold Cup at Uriah Fair Grounds oval Saturday night. The event features three heats for top claimer drivers with a $500 first prize and a 7 p.m. time trials, inverted starts, and a final two-lap dash for the Gold Cup. There is no race on Sunday, but a $2000 Monza style program is planned for the following Saturday, with $1000 prizes for the winning driver in both classes.

Mets surge to first as Giants drop key game in tight NL race

The Mets, led by Gary Gentry and others, defeated the Expos 3-0 as New York moved two games up on Chicago in the NL East. Cincinnati beat San Diego 6-4 and Los Angeles edged Houston 1-0. Willie McCovey homered twice for San Francisco, while Pete Rose sparked Cincinnati with three hits and three RBIs.
