Fort Bragg Group Named in FTC Tuna Price Fixing Charges

The Federal Trade Commission charged that most of the West Coast tuna industry conspired to fix prices and curb competition. The Salmon Trollers Marketing Association of Fort Bragg was named, along with California Fish Canners Association Inc and 13 members, plus other unions and boat owners. The complaint lists terminal island firms and several national companies, with nonmembers and leaders unavailable for comment.

Headless Body Found On Eureka Beach After Plane Crash

The headless body of a man was found on the beach near the Eel River mouth. Authorities believe it is one of two men missing after a light plane crashed off Humboldt Bay. Missing are Ernest Winkler and Clarence Fong. a third victim Harold Farquar was found last week after vanishing on August 22 flight from Eureka to the Bay Area.

Brown urges reappraisal of California mental institutions

California Attorney General Edmund G. Brown called for a reevaluation of the state mental hospital system noting it may be necessary to stop caring for the senile in some facilities. He cited the Modesto State Hospital brutality report and suggested transferring aged patients to county care. Willits and Eureka Cars in Accident

Sideswipe on the Redwood highway ten miles north of Willits damaged two cars with no injuries. Marvin Lowe of Longvale and John Miller of Eureka suffered vehicle damage as Miller crowded the center and was struck by Lowe’s northbound Ford. Auto lights failure caused Robbie Jean Bednar of Redwood Valley to steer into a culvert on a curve near Laytonville with no injuries or citations.

Congressmen Scudder to Visit Mendocino County

Congressman Hubert B. Scudder will be in Mendocino county Thursday and stay overnight in Ukiah. He will be joined by U S Army engineers for a morning visit to Fort Bragg and a coast town dinner, with a stop in Ukiah to inspect the Coyote Valley Dam and its operators.

Grass and grease fires reported in Pinoliville area

Fire crews responded to a grass fire in an open field at Pinoliville on Orrs Springs road at 11 47 a.m. then to a grease fire in an oven at 1105 West Church Street at 12 49 p.m. Earlier this morning, 10 31 a.m., another grass fire occurred at Pinoliville.

Dan Halcomb 46 managing editor of the Ukiah Daily Journal is recovering at Fort Miley Veterans Hospital after a heart attack suffered a week earlier. Doctors expect home in two weeks and a return to work in six weeks.
