Drowning Victims in Pacific Waters Near Noyo Harbor

Robert Eugene Lystrup 46 of Eureka drowned about 14 miles west of Noyo Harbor when his fishing boat Debbie L sank in rough seas. His wife, presumed missing and drowned, remains unrecovered. Lystrup died en route to Mendocino Coast Hospital after mouth to mouth resuscitation. Funeral services pending.

Language problems have chaotic result in UK court

In Rochester England Nyuk Fong Pang a 19 year old Chinese waiter faced 11 traffic offenses after a language barrier led him to drive a French car he did not know. He crashed into a double decker bus, rammed a police motorcycle, and finally hit a political club before the car halted. He was fined $201.60. A separate Bay Area transit note said BART will replace seven miles of underground cable damaged by gophers before trains begin next year.

Memorial rites in Oakland for E. Howard

Memorial services were held at St. Pauls Episcopal church in Oakland for Edward Averett Howard 66 of Oakland and Round Mountain ranch Ukiah. Died Friday in an Oakland hospital. Survived by wife Adaline Eddy Howard Piedmont daughters Berry Ann White Mill Valley Jane Ulrich Palo Alto and Mary Ann Howard Fairfax sisters Margaret Dewitt Sacramento Jane Reimers Piedmont and the late Elizabeth Erdman Santa Barbara. Albert Brown mortuary Oakland in charge of arrangements. Contributions preferred to Children's Hospital and Medical Center of the East Bay or favorite charities.

Record Enrollment Reaches 40.2 Million Students Nationwide

UPI reports the Office of Education estimates 40.2 million Americans will be in school this year from elementary to graduate level, a one percent rise from last fall’s 39.7 million. Elementary enrollment shows a small decline for the second straight year due to lower birth rates in the mid-1960s. Vermont’s 1896 absentee ballot voting is noted via Britannica.

Potter Valley youth injured in Eel River Road crash

17 year old Vincent Rojas of Potter Valley was injured when his late model pickup ran off a steep curvy hill on Eel River Road and overturned. He was treated at Ukiah General Hospital and discharged this morning. A fictitious business filing Yorkville Properties lists partners including GWR Land Company and Eugene P Gordon. The filing was recorded in MEN PDOCIND County on July 26 1971.

Prayer in schools heats up as lawmakers return

Washington UPI reports pressure mounts in Congress over a proposed constitutional amendment to restore school prayer. Mrs. Ruhlin of Ohio claims 193 of 218 signatures are secured to force a House vote, while religious groups admit a late campaign start but remain active. Judge Emanuel Celler’s Judiciary Committee advises against altering First Amendment safeguards. A correction note follows about Lions Club shelter construction in Redwood Valley.
