UPI reports giant hurricane Dora at 125 mph aimed at Cape Kennedy as Florida Georgia coastlines brace. A 550 mile Atlantic stretch from Palm Beach to Myrtle Beach on alert. forecasters warn tides may reach 10 feet and hurled winds to 175 mph by midnight. Civil defense imposes condition three in 16 counties as five rockets are moved and launches battened down.

Labor Day Fire Levels Philbrick Mill at Comptche
A pre dawn blaze leveled the Philbrick Mill in Comptche destroying the facility and most equipment. Owner Don Philbrick found the fire at 5 24 a m as divisions of Forestry from Fort Bragg Mendocino Woodlands Anderson Valley Ukiah and a Fort Bragg patrol battled the flames. Fire crews worked to contain the blaze and prevent spread to surrounding trees leaving two mill crews to finish cooling the interior. The cause remains unknown due to the rapid advance of the flames and prior holiday shutdown. The mill had been operating before the Labor Day holiday.

Mendocino County earned second place in the California State Fair viticulture exhibit with an eye catching display titled the skunk against redwoods and native ferns. The entry by Rudolph Theurlkoph of Sausalito received a red ribbon and 1400 dollars. Wine entries were submitted by Parducci and Guild Wineries of Ukiah. The display highlights the Skunk's route from Willits to Fort Bragg with a waterfall scene and wine bottles draped with grapes beside the track.

Lost Hunter Object of Wide Search
Sheriff's deputies and mounted posse aided by the U S Forest Service intensified their efforts to find David Betty 20 a Navy man from Bell Fountain Ohio found noon today by Jim Tocher Ukiah and Martin Hurt Covelo. Betty hunting for deer above Chipmunk Spring near Hull Mountain left camp Sunday at 9 a m armed with a 30 30 rifle but without matches. A 36 year old Orangeville hunter and his 11 year old son were found near Jump Off Creek after losing their way in Twin Rock Covelo. James Anderson and son Robert were found by Dick Fores of the Forest Service after leaving their station wagon on Etsel Ridge Road. In other matters investigated over Labor Day weekend Bobby Jack Anderson 29 of Pacifica was arrested by a State Depart ment.

Two people died in Lake County accidents during Labor Day weekend while Mendocino County drivers avoided fatal injuries. Betty McNeill Hanrahan, 43, of Talmage, an employee at Mendocino State Hospital, died when her car skidded and overturned on Highway 20 near the Highway 53 intersection. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at Zimmerman Mortuary with burial in Ukiah.

535 Killed On Nation's Highways Labor Day Toll
United Press International reports 535 traffic deaths over the Labor Day weekend, the second worst toll on record. California led with 45 fatalities, Texas 35, New York 28, Michigan and Ohio 23, with Delaware Montana and Hawaii reporting none.
