Washington reports the largest month to month wholesale price jump since 1946 as August totals show unadjusted 5.8 percent rise and a 6.2 percent seasonally adjusted increase. Farm prices jump 23 percent, grain up 70 percent, signaling higher meat costs for shoppers and triggering political backlash over current economic policies.
The Ukiah Planning Commission granted a use permit for construction of a new Ukiah General Hospital complex after rezoning approval from R-1 to R-3. Restrictions focus on parking landscaping screening and privacy, with final plans on parking and landscaping to be approved before construction begins.
California's admission to the union 123 years ago will be celebrated by city, county and bank employees Monday. It will be business as usual for the post office and Ukiah merchants with regular hours at grocery, department and drug stores. The post office will handle all deliveries and pickups. Walker B Tilley a former Masonite chief forester died at 79 in a Ukiah convalescent hospital after cancer. He lived between Redwood Valley and Humboldt County where he ran oyster beds and a tree farm. He served in WWI and worked with Western Pine and the West Coast Lumbermen s Association. He retired in 1959 and is survived by his wife Ethel and three sons.

Mendocino County growers harvested a 50 197 ton Bartlett pear crop the largest in history with an estimated value above 4 5 million. Ted Ericksen Jr agricultural commissioner notes costs have risen since 1968 and harvest ran July 26 to August 30. Lake County near record yields boosted the state Bartlett crop as grape picking shifts to September.
Jeff Ryan nine, of Nice, died en route to Lakeside Community Hospital after a four wheel drive rolled on Pyle Road near Nice. Coroner autopsy pending. possible inhalation of gasoline fumes as contributing factor. Driver Jeffrey Jones sixteen, also of Nice, was with him. both were on Manzanita Road area. Vehicle freed by rescuers, body taken to Jones Mortuary. A separate crash on Burger Ranch Road injured Dixie Duncan, 31, of Upper Lake, hospitalized.
Washington Star-News quotes Senate Watergate transcripts showing former White House counsel Charles Colson pressing CIA operative E. Howard Hunt Jr. to target Daniel Ellsberg after the Pentagon Papers ruling. Colson suggested financial and strategic gain in punishing any leaker. Hunt joined White House work shortly after.
