GOP majority seen possible under court redistricting plan
SACRAMENTO UPI reports Assembly Republican leader Robert G Beverly says the proposed state Supreme Court reapportionment could give the GOP an opportunity to take control of the Assembly. Democratic Speaker Bob Moretti envisions the Republicans at least four seats short of a majority, with mixed reactions from Senate leaders. Both sides agree the court drawn plan ends the legislature’s bid to draw districts. The plan could force incumbents into tough showdowns in same districts, while analysts say it could produce a 45 to 49 seat Democratic edge after the 1974 elections. Currently Democrats hold 48 seats to 31 with one vacancy. Beverly calls the plan fair and says many districts favor Republicans, though many seats remain uncertain. Moretti says he is happy with the proposal as discussions continue.
